Smith BURNSVILLE, AL, MAR. 16 Seventeen-year-old Landon Carter (Kaw) dominated Burnsville motocross competition today by claiming overall wins in both the 125 and 250cc classes. Quicksilver Enduro to Bertram By Kevin Scott NEW lORIA, CA, MAR. 9 Husqvarna's Dave Bertram negotiated slick, muddy trails for the overall win at the Salinas Ramblers' M/C Quicksilver Enduro, the first event on the District 36 northern Californ ia enduro circuit. Postponed once already by heavy rains and flooding that swept northern California in mid-February, the enduro organizers felt they were lucky just to get the event off between yet another batch of storms in early March. Riders who showed up under rainthreatening skies were rewarded with a more-than-challenging ride through sticky mud, rocky creek beds and tight manzanita woods that made up most of the course's 80 miles. The heavy brush took its toll on hands. and arms; many riders complained of cuts and bruises. Bertram feJ t the run was a challenge. "Definitely a National-caliber event, " he commented. "It's too bad it wasn't a National." A dripping fuel petcock, damaged during a fall, led to some concern from Bertram that he wouldn't make it to the finish, however, his 430 Automatic proved stingy enough on fuel to go the distance. Running outoffuel was a problem for John Haaker, whose bike ran dry one mile froin the finish.-Haaker continued on after receiving some gas from a fellow competitor to finish first in Open A, with a 53-point loss. Rob Sutliff, also on an Open class machine, wrapped up the A overall with a fine ride to a 49-point loss. Two other AA riders were in attendance to keep Bertram on his toes. Duke Lambert had a difficult ride to post a 77, but Jeff Irwin kept the pressure on Bertram through mostof the ride, finishing with a 33 for second overall. A report of some arrows down before the first check may have caused some confusion as several riders got lost briefly before finding their way back on course. Band C riders in general had a tougher time with the conditions, and the tight schedule took its toll as the attrition rate was high especially
