'n the Novice/Beginner start, the Open class KTM of Tommy Voss set the pace right off the line. Voss, riding for Pro-Cycle KTM, was at the head of the pack at the end of the bomb run, and had built up a fiveminute lead over the next Novice competitor, 250cc class Jim Eveland, as they went into the pits. Voss held on to his lead in the second loop and took the checkered flag with a comfortable margin, and 76th place in the overall standings. "It was rough. My hands will tell you that," Voss said as he pulled off his gloves to reveal bleeding blisters. "There was a lot of cross-grain stuff - that's what causes the blisters." Voss also confessed to being a little tired after losing the seat of his bike a few miles before the finish. '" have to go back and get my seat," he said. '" lost it about two miles bacK, right where the two loops come together. , had to stand up all the way in from there. " Voss, who took second overall Novice in last year's Barstow-to-Vegas race, said he's expecting to transfer to Amateur any time now, and wanted to thank his club, the loo's MC, for their hel p with his ride. There was a tussle in the 250cc Novice class as early leader Mark Schneider lost his lead to Jim Eveland t the end of the first loop, and had to fight back in the second loop to egain the first place position. chneider, who was running third in lass at the end of the bomb, was assed in a strong bid from Eveland, ho worked his way up from a slowe.r tart that left him in ninth place at e bomb. By the time the pair reached he pits at the end of the first loop, veland was running second overall n the I ovice competition, with chneider back in fifth overall, but hen the checkered flag fell, it was chneider in front once again. "The first loop was straight, flat nd a lot of whoop-de-doos," said chneider. "The second loop was ough and tight, and I like the tight luff better. , gOI lost once and gOI ust a little bit off the course, but therwise it was great." Jim Eveland said his problem was eing out of practice. '" rode Riveride last weekend," he said, "but part from that I haven't been on one f these in 10 years. I had a lot of fun ough." • 511.000 U.S. Bonds PRO-AM PURSE AT SAn()~AI. SOD ENUtES MOW - COMPlETE INSTRUCT.
