Less than a minute separated th e top two Open Amateurs over their IO-Iaprun. Mick Dowell (Kaw) earned the win over La cy Co vert (Kaw). Rob johnston (Hon) pl ayed his hand in th e O pen Expert cla ss and finished 2:28 behind Lacy for the win. Monte Sears (Ho n) took th e 200cc Amateurs with a four-minute margin in hi s first Amateur race. Novi ces, Seniors, a nd Sidehack Experts raced a t th e same time, but for 30 minutes less. Senior Experts john Kelley (KT M) and Elm er Anson (H on) battled it out for the full 90 minutes. Kelley earned the top spot with a twosecond margin, turning seven laps in 1:29:24. Seven seconds behind Anson , Ra ndy Walker (H on) was the O pe n Novice win ner with a three second adva ntage over Bill Watkins (KT M). Kris Tower (Kaw) moved up from the Mini ranks this year a nd too k his firs t win here, earning the200cc Novice trophy with an 18-second lead over Ran dy Killaman (Kaw ). Brya n Farnsworth (KTM) finished eig h th overall among the 90 mi nute classes for the 38+ Sen ior Veteran win over Boyd Abbott (KTM). Tim Weidema nn (Yam ) had it a litt le easier in the 250cc Novice chase, finishing with two minutes of breathing room . At 12th overall was Tom Schoemig (KT M), tak in g the Sen ior Amateur win by just seven seco nds o ver Monte Whitaker (H on) . Mike LaBelle (Cag) fini shed betw een them and pi cked u p th e 30+ Senior Veteran tro p hy . Dick Mila n i (H o n ) was back at 28th overall for th e O ver-The-HillGang win. H e a nd runner-u p Mack Ga rrison (H us ) had a grea t time dic in g it o u t, but Milan i had a seven seco nd a dva ntage at th e checkered. T im Dal ey (KT M) took the Senior Sportsman win wi th six laps in 1:30:53 a nd a big lead a t th e finis h. Ri ck Alexander (H us) and Pam Monon (Yam) also got in six laps for th e Vintage a nd Ladies wins, respectively. Sidehacks ran a shortened loop and th e team of Tom Ridyard a nd jody Sanders (Yam) turned 13 laps in 1:21:38 for th e win. Beginners ran their own 90-minute race ea rl ier in the day and had to co ntend with a lot more mud. Stuart Hamer (Yam) was firs t overall for the 200cc Beginner win with a 35-second advantage over Frank Prince (Kaw), second 200cc Beginner. At fourth overall , Richard Rivera (H on) earned the 250cc Beginner class hardil y, a nd at fifth overall , G.j. Iriondo (Hon ) was top Open Beginner. Minis raced first in the morning over a track saturated by heavy rains the night before. Scoring the mudsplattered riders must have been almost as bad as racing in the muck. K.C. Kirk (H o n) stayed out front and relatively clean for the Mini Amateur win with five laps in I: 11:35. Mini Novice winner Steven Bitsill y (H o n) was only 90 seco nds behind, while Mer lin Slaughter (Kaw) also had a good run , taking the Mini Beginners with five la ps in 1:22:10. This T om's Repa ir Service-sponsored pair has won a ll five races this yea r, spe ndi ng all but a few lap s in fro nt for the season. j aco bs/ Crisma n grabbed th e holeshot in th e heat , but wer e dropped to seco nd p lace for a couple of laps by th e car o f Gary Heerma n n a nd Les Hougas. jacobs/Crisman reg-dinedthe lead and held o n for th e win. In th e seco nd heat Tony H interlong, riding for T om's Re pair Service took command on th e second lap a nd ran away for th e win o n a CanAm. Tom Desort, a Coughlin Cycle Center rider on a Can-Am, finished in th e seco nd spot. Mike Cougar topped th e semi race o n a Honda. H e led every lap for th e win. For the fin al Hinterlong got th e holeshot but had his lead cut short on the third lap by Honda-mounted Paul Fabrizius, Fabrizius went on to tak e th e overall win. Hinterlong, Desort a nd Greg Richards raged a battle for th e number-two spot. Whoever carne out on top would be in first p lace in th e District point stand ings. Hinterlong held off th e other two for th e honors. Desort was dropped 10 fourth place with two laps to go by th e Kawasaki of R icha rds. Tom's Repair Service rider Tom j acobs led a ll but the final lap in th e Open class heat race.
