Fritz Kadlec, after leading the majority of the race, finished second with Mike Keen following in third. Dusty Wheels Motorcycle Club ran the event and the name proved 10 be appropriate aft er a dry spell left the 14-mi1e course with powdery dry condirions along most of the open, fast sections. The rest of the course was made up of deep sand which , by the halfway mark of the race, was heavily whooped OUI, especia lly through th e narrower wooded sections, making a more than challenging course for the 215 competitors, At the end of the one-mile choppedOUI powerline section, Kadlec had his Husky 400 in from of the 350 CanAm of Australia's Geoff Ballard. Michigan's Keen was next with last year's series runner-up, Hyde, closing in behind on his 430 Automatic Husky. The Automatic was a surprise entry, for -in the past they have proved to be a disadvantage with the dead-engine starting rule giving them a handicap off the line. Husky adopted a specially adapted lever system that put the bike off the start with the best of them, and by the end of th e first lap, Hyde was third. Brown Hawkins, Martin Lojak and Tony Hendon led a wave of 250cc riders that had started from the second wave and were coming hard from behind. By the end of lap three, the halfway mark, many of th e positions had been set and attrition was beginning 10 show with Ballard Martin and Honda development rider Drew Smith running out of gas. The two did, however, come up with en o ug h gas 10 get them pitted and on their way again , The ea rl y 125cc A leader, Stuart McAvory, also ran out of gas.Teaving another Australian,Team Husky rider Jeff Dawson. 10 rna tor o n by and take the class lead . Lap four showed Hyde and Kadlec only seconds a p art with Keen onlv 45 seconds behind the lead in g duo . Lojak was leading th e 250s and sat two and half minutes behind the leader, Hyde. Following Lojak were Hawkins, Hendon, Fred Hoes, Gary Johnson and last year 's champion, John Martin. Tom Buckles was on the move as he put his Husky four-stroke through its paces and up 10 the head of his class and 10th overal l. During the next hour, the course took its toll on riders as blisters deve loped, but with va luable points at stake, most gritted their teeth and pressed on for the sixth and final lap. At the end of the 84-mi le trek, Hyde stopped the clock at just 39 seconds past the three-hour mark with Kadlec a close 18 seconds behind after an earlier crash. Keen showed he could hold out to the end and motored in th ree minutes down on Hyde with Lojak following a minute later. Yamaha -mounted Hendon, who had slipped past Randy Hawkins in the final few minutes, was next. A badly blistered Hoes came in next for the fourth 250cc and seventh overa ll , while Martin took j o h nston on the final lap . Buckles took his class win and rounded out the top 10. Another impressive ride came from Can-Am 's John Fero, whose effort was made easier in the Senior class with the absence of Barry Higgins. Fero ended up 12th overall and won his class by a wide margin of 14 minutes. • Results 125 B: 1. Joh nny Roades 2. Todd Young 3 . Kelly A ngelen e. 126-200 B: 1. Sto rmy Sim s 2 . Randy Thrasher 3 . The 250cc Pro qualifiers saw Greg Turner and Chris Daily go one-two in the first heat. The other two qualifiers were showcases for Kessler and Bias as each look commanding leads, with Kessler nearly lapping runnerup Mark Butler in his heat, and Bias doing the same in the third heat to runner-up John Driscoll. Kessler took the early lead in the 250cc Pro final from consi winner Bellora and was never headed. The veteran racer was well aware of both Bellora dn Bias, who had been invo lved in a first turn mishap, and rode flawlessly to the win. Bellora he ld on for second after fighting off a fierce charge by Bia s. Butler and Drisco ll filled in the top five. The evening's finals got underway with Kelly holding the early lead in the l25cc go over Bias, Bellora and Henry Dorschug. By the halfway mark Bias had reeled in Kelly and ta ken over the lead. Kessler, who sta rted well back in the pack, a lso caught ' Kell y and tried several times unsu ccessf ully 10 get by for a shot a t Bia s. On the last lap Kessler fina ll y moved by Kelly for second, but it was too late to close the gap o n win ner Bias. Kessler siormed 10 the lead a t the start of th e 250cc Pro final, bUI Bias picked up the pace early and soon attached himself to Kessler's rear wheel. The IWO disappeared from Bellors, who was running third, and the long awaited battle began. Kessler used lapped riders to his advantage as he skillfully threaded his way through the backmarkers, but every inch h e was able to pull away Bias quickly reeled in. Wilh three laps 10 go Bia s attempled 10 jump inside of Kessler in the final corner, but the veteran shut the door on Bias and held the lead until the last lap. The crowd roared with approval as Bia s ou traced Kessler down the back stretch, flipping tear-offs away ove r the jumps as he went ove r la p p ed riders' heads. At the checkered flag wi nner Bias sa luted the fans with another one-handed clicker, just ahead of runner-up Kessler. • Results SATU RDAY AFTERNOO N 250 EXP: 1. M ickey Kessler (Kaw); 2.
