S The Barbenders West Motorcycle Club dominated the California Racing Club's Annual Club Challenge Enduro, best- 82 ing a field of II clubs. Casa Grande Suzuki's Todd Johnson , all th e way from Tempe, Arizona, took th e overall win in the individual co n test, despite this being his first ride on a 250 and running flat-tired the last six miles. Since Johnson was not riding for po ints, Rick "Dangerous" Daniels was the official overall winner, scoring a 7.332-min u te drop to Johnson 's incredible 6.293. This year, each team was a llowed a IS-man team , five riders per line, and the 10 best enduro scores counti ng . The ove rall win ner was chose n by a combination of end uro results and the 10th rider 's time in th e deadengine start, Candy Ass Hill mat ch race spectacl e. Except for th e Ventura County Motorcycle Club (VCMC) cap tain 's face-saving fifth-overall, S.3S4-minute drop, th e Barbenders West swept all of the first eigh t places. Barbenders team cap tai n Donnie Simon e went down in flames, tak ing his line with him. But Da niel , Sp oof Siva, T ony Casaga, J im Bollin grn o, Sco tt Crawford, Steve Bebeck a nd Davy J o nes sto le the ot her seven spots, all the . " eigh ts" (excep t Dan iel' s 7.332), a nd six ind ividual class wins. Last year' s first-place team , Granada Yamaha, su rp risi ngly ended up with third overall. T he mat ch race, which us uall y determ ines the winner an d is normally decid ed by one or two secon ds, wa s al so a ru naway ro mp. Wi th an unrea chabl y low score of 94 poi nt s dropped, the Barbenders again showed no mercy in the rough Candy Ass H ill challenge. Despite a n u nu suall y short loop , their I .OS-minute dro p saw a record seven-second margin pver... _ the talent-loaded VCMC , who . . -... --_. ~ - ended up wi th a 1.15 o n the hill and a score o f 163. The Bar ben ders East ba ckup team came in fourth in the team sta ndings, a nd ac tua lly had th e second fastest tim e o n th e hill a t 1.11. Randy Pretzer's Granada Yama ha team fell to a LIS fourth pl ace, but redeemed themselves to thi rd overall by virtue of their better end uro results. Their 174 drop just ni cked th ird away from the Barbenders East, who . dropped 179. Rounding o u t th e top five was the Husky-mounted Central Associat ion Team, at 196. Un like last year' s event, wh ich many cla imed were too slow, th e 'S6 enduro featured the opposit e: Lots of cold-fighting high speeds; free time (two useless) instead of resets; lots of checks and mind-games - and controversy. Several opposing views were expressed, mainly about speeds, marking and tricks. Most vocal were rnernbersofthe FRA and UEA. The latter's Charlie Brown said, "It was extreme ly dangerous. The speeds were wa y too fas t a nd I never really felt co mfort abl e o n the course." Ed " Berzerko" Mazenko agr eed, addi ng, " The marking was (poor) and we had five guys inj ured. It wasn ' t a fa m ily endu ro." While th e pre-check six " free time " mind ga me cost Simone and others dearly, P ipes Stanfield fel t th ere was deception going on and was direct in hi s cr iticism: " Ch eck six was off a t least two-tenths of a mile. It was a tr ick. " But th e mil eage in questi on was chec ked and found to be correct, and several riders had red faces. Gl enn Larsen gave his eva lua tio n of the course. " I liked th e Special Test, a nd there were no unacceptable rocky sect ions," he said. " H igher speeds were O K, but th e dull and bor ing section near Slash X j us t added mileage. All the checks were gr eat , but it wou ld have been ni ce to have a center chec k in a tak e-u p section ." In what may prove to be th e yea r' s biggest end uro a t 500 entries, owner J erry O 'Neal sa id , " I th in k we made it a littl e too hard." Results TEAM: i . Barbenders West (94 1 2. DeVane devours Dade City By Athie Sanders DADE CITY, FL, JAN. 25 Dade City Raceway hosted its first ride of the 1986 Points Championship Series with a roster of 240 riders as Vince DeVane, Tim Ealy , Beth Rew is and Hal Neighbors bagged back-so-back rn oto wins to take the overall in each of their classes. DeVane stuffed hi s YZ125out front a t th e sta rt of th e first 125cc A moto a nd neve r looked back. Tommy R ios ca me out of the holeshot beh ind DeVan e, but soon found that Ricky Bellavance was crowding him out, cla iming the second-place position for himself. Doug Brown opened up h is Kawasaki and put the p ressure on Rios. Their bikes jammed, allowing Brown to pull ahead of Rios. As the moto wor e on, DeVane spaced himself out of reach , while Rios sliced through th e pack in the background to regain hi s lost posirions. When the ch eckers came out, DeVane cruised in for the easy win with Rios , Bellavance, Brown a nd Peter Lupkas rounding o u t the top five. DeVan e j u m ped out front once again a t the start of rnoto two and led a field that remained unchanged. As th ey crossed th e finish line it was DeVane, followed by Rios, Bellavance, Brown a nd Lupkas. Mot o o ne o f th e 250cc A class saw Ti m Eal y, Kenny Keylon's state-side mechanic, ou t in front off th e line. Brian Kidd , Doug Brown, Gar y Rosse and Mar k Peterson jammed in beh ind hi m. DeVane, with hi s work cu t o u t for h im due to a poor start, di ced through the pack to take Peterson, then went to the inside arou nd Rosse. Time ran out for DeVan e, a nd Ealy kept it out fro nt as Kidd , DeVane, Peterson a nd Bro wn followed him past the checkers. Eal y took th e win moments befor e DeVane and Peterson; Brown and Gary Rosse followed in behind to round ou t th e top five positions. Afterthe race, the 26-year-old Eal y, with a broad smile across hi s face, sai d, "This is th e first rac e I have been in since las t yea r 's Winter AMA. I'v e go ne a wh ol e year without riding. I want to than k Kenny, for I wouldn 't have been here if it weren 't for him , this is his p ractice bike. I just can 't believ e how well 1 did." DeVane said that he was having some real problems on the straightaway. " My bike just wasn't handling right. The front end was washing out." Beth Rewis totally dominated the newly formed Women's class as she cla imed the holeshot and kept the lead, taking the win in both motos. Laurie Kitsch 's 2-3 moto finishes gave her second overall and Gina Perry's 4-2 netted her third overall. Rewis said, " I just got good starts and kept it out front all the way. It was a good race for me." The Open Amateurs came off the line as Hal Neighbors and Graham Kimble battled for the lead. Kimble went wide , claiming it as Neighbors, . T ed Vannest and Kraig Constantino followed, not far behind. Kimble was clearly sett ing the pace, but it was obvious to all that he knew Neighbors was righ t on his tail. Kimble laid into a tu rn and came up short. He quickly remounted, but not before Neighbors and Vannest had gone by. Kimble bit the dust again before the lap wa s over. H e pulled offto the sid e of the tra ck , removed his helmet and 'wa tch ed as his dreams vanished. Neighbors had stayed out front to tak e th e win with Vannest and Constantino wrapping up second and th ird. Kimble didn 't sta rt moto two , a nd Neig hbors too k command right a way.. Constantin o followed him past the checkered with Van nest close beh ind. Constantino's 3-2 overall was good enough to send him home with second overa ll, lea ving Vannest to sett le fo r thi rd.
