Houston I would like to m ak e so m e comm ents on the 1986 Houston AMA Indoor National Short Track. I have attended this event a lm ost yearly sin ce 1968. This year th e crowd wa s smaller than I believe it has ever been. The supercross race on Sunday did nothing to draw a crowd to the short track. Ins tead , they cancelled th e TT event/ and the TT spectators sta yed h o m e altogether. The racers stayed home too l The depth of talented National class riders was shallow a nd it showed as eac h race strung out in th e ea rly laps. Maybe th e cost to set up an indoor bike (and tra vel. . .) was too much to compete in a sin g le race (no TT p o ints) wh ich was un lik e any other race o n th e ca lenda r. The track was sma ller due to p ortions o f th e prebuilt supe rcross tr ack. T here was no rea l program . It was a newspaper quality six-p age affair folded aro un d th e lat est co py o f Cycle N ews. Definitel y not me ant to be kept a s a memento. At lea st a ll of this has p rompted me to try specta tin g o ne o f th e other Camel Pro races next year (ho pe fu lly a mile!). On a n uplifting not e, thanks to a real professional who takes the time for motorcycle race fans - Alex j orgenson.1 have seen him ta ke timeout for fans on ma n y occasions. (Thanks for the p hotol) Good lu ck this season ! STEVE M. LI GON Tyler, TX Fun is beck for 1988 • . After a uendi ng three motorcycle shows in th e la st three 'mo nt hs, th e mo torcycle o utlook is bright and promising. Most encouraging are the severa l new models, both dirt an d street, fo r en try- level riders. T he best pa rt of th ese n ew m od el s is th at yo u don 't n eed legs like j o h n Wayne to climb o n or to kick start them. The first five years of the 1980s were th e pits for th e m otorcycle industry. The introdu ction of ATVs and ATCs kept most dealers a live, but adverse publicity on programs, lik e 20/20, definitely hurt a ll motorcycl ists. Cycle News readers know about the campaigns trying to offset the effects o f this nega tive exposure. just before Ch ristmas 1985, P aul Golde of the Motorcycle Ind ustry Council, was on prime-time televisio n news in the southern California a rea to tell the public about the.posirive side of ATV and ATC use a n d to sh o w the public th e protective gear a nd us e that makes our industry a fu n sport. Another positive move was th e cha nge madeby so u thern California , radio sta tio n KPFK, 90.7 FM, wh en th ey moved th eir radio talk show, Center Stand. from midnight to 2:003:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon . Ma rgaret Fowler is th e host ess of Center Stand. An o ther rad io talk show is Mo torcycle World on 99.9 FM in so u th ern California, 100.9 FM in San Fr anci sco / O a kland , 105.5 FM in Sacramento a nd 690 AM in th e western U.S. T his a irs eve ry Sunday even ing from 10:00 to 11 :00 p .m. with Larry Huffman as host. This is a no the r plus for o ur ind ustry. With all of us working together we ca n promote th e fun a sp ect o f motorcycle riding, especia ll y o n th e g reatest line of entry- level dirt and street bikes I have ever seen . 1£ you are new to motorcycli ng, welcome to the world 's best sport. PAT OWENS Instructo r, Mo torcycle Repair L.A. Trade -Technical College Los An gel es, CA Stadium trials The 1986 Daytona Speedweek is a p proach in g fast. At last year's Speedwee k, a ll the attention was p ut o n th e sw itchover fro m Fo rmula One race bikes to th e Superbikes. Due to th is change. we believe a unique part of mo torcycle competi tion wa s o verlooked a nd eli minated . Trials co m pe tition (s tadi u m tr ia ls) is a new , g rowi ng sport in th e USA a nd well es ta blished in th e European co u ntries. Where '5 the desert? I'm a sho rt track and motocross racer from So ut h Dakota who has never run a desert race. T he problem is, I know no th in g at all a bo ut desert racing and would like to kn o w m or e so that I mi ght be able to compete in the Frontier 500 the next time it's held. What I would like to know is when the event is scheduled, how ma ny men you need for a pit crew, how many miles apart should the pit crew be placed, if it is essentia l to pre-run th e course to be competitive and any other essentia l information.
