Arizona. a nd came up in third, with Swin e n o w com ma nd in g seco n d and Perry ba ck in first. Blackburn reeled in Swine, then Brantley push ed Swine back to fourth. On th e last lap, Blackburn lo st it again, a llowi ng Brantley and Sw ine to move up a notch and set th e order for th e checkered - Perry, Brantley, Swin e, Bla ckburn. It was Swine out front in the second moto, as sh e commanded th e lead for half the race. Charles T anner , who fini sh ed fifth in rnoto one, started a strong secon d, Blackburn third an d Bran tley fourth . Brantley an d Perry put the mo ve on Blackburn a n d set o ut aft er Swi ne. Steve Walker (Dan ny's Machine Works), on hi s 500 CR Honda, was Means ' only real competition as he led for two laps before crashing, allowing Means back into the lead and on to the win. The start wa s nearly seven miles to check one, which allowed rid ers a wide variety of lines. As the leaders hit check one, they were spread out, with Means leading th e p ack. Walker was in Means ' dust, followed closel y by John Bird (KTM). By the end of the first loop, Walker was rig h t on Means' tai l. Both Means and Walker had pulled out a good lead on th ird-place rid er Bird. Ap p roach ing check two o n th e second loop, Walker swep t by for th e lead. Means glued h imself to Walker 's rear fender for the n ex t lap , waiting for a n y m istak es. J us t ou t of th e fivem ile mudhill section, th e m istake ca me. Mea ns took fu ll advantage of th e crash a n d retook th e lead. Walker rem ounted an d chased Means but was u na ble to mak e u p th e di stance th a t the cras h had cost h im . Mounting a new Honda , Estell e took th e lead ear ly and lengthened it co nside ra bly as McBride experi enced problem s. With a victory assu red and halfway through the last lap, Estelle himself had mechanical difficulty.
