FEB . 23 Bro thers Mike and Phil Larson from Bremerton, Washin gton, were the stars at Huron Cycl e Park for the six th round o f the Continental Motosports Club's Skoal Ba n d i t Golden State National Series with wins in the 250 and 500cc Pro classes. Mike Larson went 1-2 for the 250cc class wi n. while older brother Phil Larson tallied a 1-3 score for the 500cc overall. Yamaha-mounted Doug Dubach wa s one of th e fastest 125cc Pro riders on the track . but on paper he wasn't. After winning a hard-fought battle in . th e first I25cc mota, he learned a few moments before th e sta rt of th e second rnoto that he h ad been penalized in th e first mota and dropped .back to 13th in the standings for jumping th e gate. " I didn 't even know they penalized me until I heard so meth in g mentioned about it over the p.a..' said Dubach, "and I didn 't even jump th e gate. I did move a little too soon and hit the gate, but I didn 't go over it. I can't believe they penalized me; they should hav e at least talked to me about it before they made their decision." Dubach's probl ems didn 't end there either. In the second rnoto, whil e battling for second, he was penalized agajrifor passing under a yell ow flag, which he claims he didn 't do . " I feel cheated," said Dubach. Even if Dubach hadn 't been penalized, an overall victory wouldn 't have been a sure thing for him. Kawasaki rider Tyson Vohland gave Dubach a run for his money in both motos, Vohland wound up taking th e first moto win wh en Dubach was penalized , but plain ly beat him in the second mota. Vohland went I-I for the overa ll. Nothing n ew happened in the 80cc Expert or Vet Pro classes. Kyle Lewis and his Honda won the 80cc Expert class for the sixth time, while Yama ha-mounted Rex Staten did the same in the Vet Pros. Bot h riders went I-I for the victories. Yamah a rider Bader Manneh grabbed the earl y lead in the first 125cc Pro mota and held on to the position for the next three laps before Vohland snuck by. Once into the lead, Vohland pulled ahead by a few bikelengths, while an intense battle over second between Hallman 's Manneh , Race Tech's Dubach. Suzuki 's Bobby Moore and Lancer's Drey Dircks (Han ) took p lace. Three laps later, Dubach found the hot line into second and started reeling in th e leader Vohland. Dubach quickly closed the gap and chased Vohland for th e next four laps, while Moore moved into third. Moore started breathing down Dubach's back but couldn 't find an opening around the Yamaha rider, who was stalking Vohland. Three laps from th e finish, Dubach made his move and darted into the lead and held Voh land back for the win. Moore finished third a h ead of Suzuki rider Jim Tarantino, Yamaha's Scott Burnworth, Manneh and Dircks. The second rnoto featured an allout duel between Vohland and Dircks, whi le Moore worked his way up through the pack after a near lastplace start. Vohland led for the first eight laps with Dircks inches behind in every turn . During the ninth lap, Dircks found an opening and jammed into the lead and stayed there for the next three laps. With the white flag waving, Vohland set after Dircks and passed the Honda rider a half lap later and edged Dircks for the win. Tarantino followed a few seconds back in third, nipping Moore. Officially Burnworth took fifth, while Manneh and Honda rider Ty Davis finished sixth and seventh; Dubach 18th. Honda rider Brian Manley (Ma lcolm Smith Products) grabbed the . holeshot in the first 250cc moto a nd led for a lap before Tarantino and his Suzuki blew by and started pulling away. Whi le Tarantino enjoyed a fairly comfortable lead. Man ley had his hands full keeping ahead of HiPoint's Mike Larson. But Manley couldn't hold on for very long and let Larson by on the fourth la p. After that, it was a two-rider show between Larson and Tarantino. Larson slowly caught up lO Tarantino to within five bikelengths near the end of the race, but that was about as close as he could get. Tarantino flew across the finish line for the win, closely followed by Larson . Manley finished third ahead of Lancer's Shaun Kalas (H a n), AXO's Russ Wageman (Ya m) , Gear Racewear's Greg Ziuerkopf (Han) and M-Star's Rodney Smith. The second moto was all Larson's from start to finish . Tarantino didn't get off the line cleanly and was fifth exiting the first turn. In between were Zitterkopf, Wageman and Manley. Larson quickly pulled away, while I Wageman motored into second. He stayed there for the next six laps before stalling his motor in a turn and letting Manley by for second. Larson went on to take the win, and with it , taking th e overall. Tarantino finished second overall , while Manley's 3-2 gave him third. Fourth went to Wageman (5-3), while fifth fell to _Ka lo.!;J4-7). The first 500cc rnoto saw Honda rider Larry Dashiell jam into the lead but was pa ssed three laps later by Phil Larson and his Knobby Shop Int ern a tio nal Yamaha. Two laps after that, Yamaha rider Jim' Ellis motored into second, while Wageman fol lowed. AXO 's Willy Simons was the rider to watch at this point. After a miserable start, the Honda rider picked off riders one by one until he was in third and pressuring Ellis three laps from the finish. Simon's drive ended after he passed Ellis in the following laps and took second at the finish . Larson won it with six seconds to spare. Third went to Ellis, followed by Wageman, Ziuerkopf and Smith. After finishing eigh th in the first m o ta , Mike Larson came bac k and (Co ntin ued to page 26)
