Green grabs double Oakwood win · By Derryl.Anderson RO Y, WA, FEB. 8 W ood la nd H o n d a-m o u nted Randy G reen returned fro m th e Houston National to win th e 250 and 500cc Pro A m ai n s tonigh t at the short track held in Roy, Was hington . T he track was in excellent shape, but it was only 29°F inside the arena. In th e first hea t of the 250cc P ro class , G reen came out smokin ' to lead Kirk Stron g (Hon), Mickey Fay (Bul), Chris Staley (Yam), a nd Mike Budscha t (Yam). The order remained the same for th ree la ps, then Budscha t moved by Staley, o nly to ha ve p roblems which left h im in last. Strong began push in g Green un til the two were side -by-side. T he y rode that way in turn three, and up the stra ightaway. Green p ull ed ahead a lit tle, but Strong was ri ght there with hi s front wheel rubbi ng Green 's leg. T hey were sideby-side again down the backstretch , but Green sh ut the door and went o n to th e win . Behind Green in order was Stro ng, Fa y, and 40 yards back was Sta ley. In the second 250cc Pro heat race, Mike McClain ca me off th e li ne in front , but by turn o ne, Darrel Davi s a nd Tom Newman had joined him. T he th ree were in a tigh t group, fig h ting thei r way around the corner, whe n out of no wh ere came Mark Roo ks all th e way aro u nd the ou tside to claim the lead. Stri nging out behind Rooks was Davis, McC lain , Newman a n d Troy Rose. Da vis pressured Rooks, while Newman took co ntro l of third a nd Ro se mov ed into fourth . Davis tried Rooks on the inside, bu t he was riding such a perfect line th ere was no room to squeeze by. Davis was forced to go ' to the outside, but the long way around dido 'i.work either. Taking th e checkered fl ag"in order was Rooks aboard the Roger StanleySimpson Honda, Davis, Ro se, Newman, and McClain . Green got the holeshot in the 250cc Pro trophy dash, fo llowed by Strong, Rooks a nd Davis. Rooks got into turn three too hot and slid wide, allowing Davis to move by. Davis went aft er Strong a nd passed hi m al so, but there was no catch in g Green . G reen 's skill s were well -honed as he took control of every race he entered tonight. Lead in g th e 250cc Pro s off the line t ' • • • I • •• , ~ .. • • • •. , .... in th e A main was again G reen , followed by Rooks with a no ther a maz ing sta rt, then Davis, Fa y, Rose, Newman and Stal ey. Rooks got by Green in th e fir st corner. but Green repaid th e favor befo re they reached turn three. Davi s p ut a bea u tifu l mo ve o n Rooks to tak e secon d, bu t Rook s charged into turn three and slid under Davis to rega in the seco nd spot. Coming out of tu rn four, Roo ks got ou t of shape and was unable to save it as he went down. Green was ou t front with a 30-yard lead as the others played follow-the-leader. Wi th one lap to go, Fay mov ed by Da vis and the finishingorder was set. At th e flag it was Green, Fay, Da vis , Strong, Rose, New man, and Sta ley. In the first heat of the 500cc Pro class , Randy Green co ntin ued his do mi nation as he took th e hol esh o t ahead of Davis, Rick Stocks, T ricia Lyons, Robert Frohs a nd Aaron Waggo ner, who had eq ui p ment pro blems and wo und up with a DNF. O n the first lap Davis moved u p right nex t to Green , but Green was a ble to p ull away. On lap two Davis went u nder G reen to ta ke th e lead . Wi th two la ps to go , Green slid under Davis on th e insi de an d p us hed th e yo u ngster super-hard, bu t Davis refused to give a n inch. Green had to back off wi th onl y I ~ laps to the finish. Davis rode beautifully a nd seemed to have th e win well in hand, when all of a sudden Green slid under in turn three a nd pushed Davis. This time Green didn't giv e up; he just kept th e gas on virtuall y shoving Davis over a bou t five feet and blowing by to tak e th e win in the m ost exciting heat race seen in our area this year. Fo llowing th e two in order was Tricia Lyons, who made th e trip up from Redla nd, Oregon, Fro hs , spo rti ng new Stewart leathers , and Rick Stocks, on a Honda. Natio na lly ra n ked Mickey Fa y looked ex tremely smooth to night as he cruised to th e wi n in th e seco nd 500cc heat, followe d by Schni tzer, Zirbel. Budsch at, Barcla y and Potter. In the third heat race, it was Gerrard taking th e win over Mark Rooks, Kirk Strong (wi th in a whee l), T odd Dabies, and Mik e Sullivan. At th e start of th e 500cc Pro A main everyo ne was a little too anxious as riders slowly creptJorward until the starter finally stepped out of his box. On the next try, Rooks led about a third of the riders off the line too soon, sending him to the third row. It took several minu tes to get everyone behind all three row s for a clean start. First to th e corner aga in was Green , followed by Fay, Davis, Gerrard a nd th e rest of th e pack. On lap three, Fay slid under G reen when he wen t a little too wide in tu rn four. Comin g o ut of turn two , Green came back to rep ass Fay . On th e fifth lap , Gerrard go t by Fay to secure second a nd Rooks went by Schni tzer.
