O n the final la p , Burn worth sta lled h is m o tor in a turn , a nd Frisz go t to within in ch es of th e Yama ha rid er. For the last few turns, th e two were side -by-side, but Burn worth held o n fo r th e win . Main H ol esh ot a rtis t R yan beat 20 o the r riders to the first turn a t th e start of th e 20-lap main , whil e J ohnson , O'Mar a, Gl over, Bow en, Ba ilev a nd Lech ien foll ow ed. By th e seco nd lap, Ward made th e o n ly pass whe n he sl ip ped by Bow en. Lechi en and H o lley ta ngled in a turn w hen Le ch ien fell over and H oll ey ran in to him. Lechien 's tem pe r fla red when Holley landed on to p o f him wh ile Lechien was trying to pick up his bike. Lech ien pushed Holley away a ngrily. " He (Lec h ien ) fell down in front of me, a nd 1wa s just tr ying to get o u t of hi s wa y a s quickl y as possible by wheelieing over hi s bike," said Holley. "He must 've th ought 1 wa s trying to hit him , so he tri ed to push m e down. It was a bi g mi sunder standing." Lech ien recovered nearl y dead last. Mean wh ile, J ohnson sn uc k by R ya n, but R yan quickl y retaliat ed a nd led for a nothe r lap befo re J ohnson made a pa ss th at stuck. " Rig h t a fte r he passed m e back ," sai d Ryan , " my clutch-lever bolt tightened up , and th e cl utch d idn ' t work as good as it did. At first 1 though t a rock got stuck in it, so 1 slo wed down to look, bu t th ere wasn 't, 1 had to rid e the rest of th e m ot o with the cl u tch sli p pi ng. " R yan gradua lly drop ped back , w hi le Ward wor ked hi s way u p th roug h the pack. By th e fifth lap , J oh nson ope ne d up a good-sized lead over O 'Mara , G lo ver , Wa rd , Bail ey, R yan , Dymond, Bow en , Pederson a nd H oll ey. Gl over p ressured O 'M ara for second, wh ile Ward hounded Gl over. Four laps la ter , Ward m otored by Gl over a n d set o u t after O'Mara. It took an o ther four laps for Ward to pass O'Mar a , but o nce into seco n d, J ohnson wa sn ' t in Ward' s sig h t. " O nce 1 go t in to seco nd," said Ward, "he (Joh nson) was wa y o ut the re. When 1 was behind Johnny , m y foot got ca ught in a rut and had to really kick it back. which ca used the back o f m y th igh to cramp. When it cra m pe d up , 1co u ld n't straig h ten o u t, so I was in pain the wh ol e time. 1 kn ew if I kept p us h ing, I'd go into a co rner a nd n ot ge t m y leg o u t in time a n d fall over. So 1was happy with second." At th is p oint, th in gs rea lly settled down , with Johnson way ou t in front, a nd the to p runners fa ir ly sp rea d o ut. O 'M ara kept Ward wit h in sig ht bu t wa sn 't reall y pressu ring. Abou t three seconds back wa s Ba il ey, who had ea rlier passed Gl over . With th e chec kered flag in view, th e on ly battl e still u p in th e a ir was th e o ne for fourth bet ween Bailey and Gl over. Gl o ver pushed a nd push ed bu t co u ldn' t find th e hot lin e around Ba iley, fin ishing just in ch es behind. J ohnson had a 13-second lead over Ward a t th e fin ish , wh ile O 'Mara , Bailey, Gl over , Dymond, Pederson, Holley, R yan , Kin g , Bow en , Kell er a n d Burnworth foll owed . " I just ro de m y ow n race ," said J ohnson. " Brian (Lu n n is, Johnson's mechanic) was beating me over th e head last ni ght for not riding m y own ra ce (yesterd a y) a n d doing stupid stuff like that. Wh en 1 got th e lead, 1 tried to keep from lo oking back and just read my pit board." 125 Pro-Am San Diego Pro-Am Su percross winn er Sch m it ca p tured th e h oleshot at th e start o f Su n day's race, w h ile Sat urday ni ght winner Surratt was ne ar th e back o f th e pack . Closely chasing Schmit was Ri ch ardson , Sco tt Brown (Hon), Dean Mat son (Kaw) a nd Craig Canoy (Hon ). A la p lat er, Rich ardson su rprised Schmit a nd st uffe d h im in a turn, taking ove r the lead , whi le Brown, Mat son, T yson Vohland (Kaw) and Canoy traded pos ition s back and forth for third. Schmit stayed close to R ich ardson for th e next eigh t laps before go ing back into th e top sp o t. Ri chardson tried to stayed clo se but dropped back. Yamaha-mounted Bader Manneh , wh o h ad ea rlier won an exciting duel again st Surratt in th e first 125cc h eat race, had worked hi s wa y into fourth a fter a p oor start, but crashed. in the stu tter bumps, as did Canoy two laps later. Schmit ea sily went on to win his second 125cc Pro-Am win of the series, while Richardson , Vohland, Surratt, Dre y Dircks (H on) and Matson followed. • Results Saturday 250 MAIN: 1.
