SC, JAN. 26 Kevin Hines, riding a KT M sponsored by KTM America an d H&H Husqvarna/KTMI Can-Am of Mab leton , Georgia, ou t-gunn ed SE&TRA regulars All en Gravitt and Ra nd y H awkins to win th e 17th Annual Sumter Enduro, a round of th e SE&T RA Ch ampionship Endu ro Series . Hines turn ed in a eigh t-poi nt score th at wa s good for a o ne point win in a run th a t was sto p pe d a t th e halfway mark . The in cid ent th at brought the event to a prem ature halt began wh en a n unnamed rider wa s injured in a fall on a paved road. A South Carolina Highway Patro lman, responding to the. accidenr .call, .beca me, ver y .ira e when he th ought th at riders wer e racing on th e highway. H e refused to allow the end u ro to co nt in ue. even though man y riders produced their licen ses, insurance paper s. etc. When Sumter County Deputi es, who wer e hel p in g direct end u ro traffi c, tried 10 interced e, th e Highway Patrolman threatened to pl ace th em under arrest. Desp ite stopping th e event. the Highwa y Patrolman did not issue any citations 10 participants. Sumter Enduro Club offici al s said th ey would fil e a form al complaint against the patrolman . They explained that they had received clearance for the event from Highwa y Patrol headquarters prior to th e en d uro. Club members apologized to out-ofstate riders who were treat ed rudel y a nd promised 10 do everything possible 10 assure that there would not be a reoccurrence of this type in future events. O ver 350 competitors signe d up for th e event that has become a bailie between SE&T RA riders and riders fro m th e north who have vent ured south to compete. Among the entrants was N at io n a l En d uro C h ampion Terry Cunn in gham, who DNF reportedly due to running ou t of gas. SE&TRA riders competing i n unusua lly cold weather and in stea dy rain were led by Gra vi tt with the AA class wi n . Mark Ea ddy with the Top A class performan ce. a nd Mark's brother George Ea ddy , who won th e 250cc A class. T he to p B score was turned in by Georgia 's Kei th Shealton wh o continued his dominance of the 200cc B class. JAN. 26 On a less than desirable da y, T add Salton made his performance very desirable by winning the Expert class in the Squ are Deal R iders Mu d an d Snow Scram bles. Af ter a n evening of h eav y sn o w. th e m il e-long trac k was laden with a IO-inch cove r wh ich made passage ex tremely difficult. Salton . ho wever . completed the half-hour event with en ergy to spare as h e earned his first ever Expert class victory. Adding to the sweetness of that victory was the fact that he had stopped the wi n streak of Randy Gardner, who had n o t been beaten in 25 consecutive events span n ing two yea rs. Gardner fin ished seco nd in the Expert class behind Salton a n d runner-up Ken Titus. The 250cc class fea tu red a classic confrontation between Steve Deemie a nd Lenny McBrid e. Deemie had tri u m p hed in th ree consecu tive events. whil e McBrid e h ad go ne tw o for two. Adding 10 th e competit ion was Craig Estell e. McBride to ok the lead off the start. bu t by the co m pletio n of th e first la p Estell e h ad the lead. After being p ressured hard by McBride and Deernie fo r two laps. Estelle fell and relinquished his lead . Deem ie a nd Mc Bride swapped the lea d several times befo re McBrid e got the checkered flag first 10 tie h im with Deem ie at th ree wi ns eac h. Mini class rider Cu rt Blewett co ntinued hi s domination of that class by add in g a seven th win to his strin g of victories.
