The Pros ran in a single 18 even t a nd it was a bailie bet ween 5001'1'riders Ken Zahrt, Will y Si mons and 2501' ' rider J OI: Hopk ins. Zahrt 1 (AXO / Kl Suspension ) ~Ol th e hol eshot in moro one with Wild Willy Simons embarrassingl y close bhind. Simons (Simi Honda ) took the lead in lap four and sailed on for the mota win . Hopkins (Honda/ Answer/Valley Kawasaki) closed in on Zahn and the IWO fought in those positions until rhe [lag, despite being in differem classes. Simons and Zahn were first and second in the 5001'1' class and Hopkins was fir st 2501' . The first 1' mala of the 1251' ' P ro s was th e Mike 1 Kiedrowski show. He shot to th e lead right off the line. quickly buill up an un touchabl e lead , and then ind u lged in some incredible aerobatics over the finish line jump. Mike Kell finished in a distant second. By mid-ra ce, Black had th e lead and went on for th e win a nd th e ov erall. Things got off to a rough sta rt for th e Southea st ern Short Track ers Association, as th e fir st ra ce of th e season was met with Moth er Nature pla yin g havoc with their pe rfec t ly prepared tra ck, a n d co n tro versy su r ro u n d in g th e O pen Pro race. SST offi cials arrived at the track to find their perfectl y prepared. 1/3 mile ov a l in not-so-perfect co nd itio n , Due 10 a warming trend ea r lier in the week. the ice was soft in places and very torn in o thers . Even while the shan track on which the races were even t u a lly run was being prepared, th e sn o w p lo w sunk through the ice in several places. This provoked many racers 10 pack up and go back 10 Waukegan. All in all. 70 racers stayed and raced on the hasti lv prepared track , Controversy shrouded th e start of the Open Pro class race. It was agreed that Tim Farrell did get a good start. It is agreed that his stan was beuer than a ny o ne else 's start. What is not agreed is whether or nOI he jumped the light. It was finall y determined that he merely limed the lights perIect ly. Anyway, exiling turn IWO. Farrell held a slim lead over Mi ke Drdla. Fierce battles which lasled th e en tire race held a tten tio n of the spectators as Ordla was finall y passed by Bob Ybema. In fourth wa s Mark Yonjof. Ri ck Gruber once again won firstplace m oney in the Pabsl 2501'1' ProAm Challenge. Yonjof came in second, wilh YI>ema and Di esi Ihi rd and founh. FEB. 6 A capacity crowd filled the ba llroom of th e Embassy Suite Thursday night to honor the winners of th e Ari zona Championsh ip Ser ies. Tim Timmons. promoter of Canyon Ra cew a y, kicked things off by introducing Mike Mclntyre, Firebird Raceway's race promoter, a n d represe rua t ives from DID Chain and Ponca Sprockets . Bill Young, owner of Young C ycle Supply, presented each winner with a trophy and a grab bag. Thi s was Bill Young's six th year as th e major spo nsor of moto cross in Arizona. Brian Cook, Eri c Farleigh, and Jimmy Mokry were o n hand 10 receive Iirst-, second- and third-place trophies in the Junior C ycles division. The top three finishers in Mini Beginners were Ro ger Bal es. Chris Wickersham and Doug Sham. Several racers came away with IWO trophies each . Cook took third in Mi ni Novice in addition 10 his first Junior C ycle. SCali Carnell also scored twice with second Mini Novice Stock and Mini Novice Modified championships. while SCali Connelly won both Mini Novice classes. JJ Tunnell was devastating in the Mini Amateur class this year and scored in both Stock and Modified division s. Kris Tower look first in 1251'1' Beginners. while Deana Cowen gal gold in 1251'1' Novice. Billy Carlson won both Amateur classes w ith Dennis Parker topping th e 1251'1' Expen class .
