In. th e Vet P ro races, Yamaha YZ490 pi lot from Fo n ta na, Ca liforni a, Rex State,i breezed to victory for hi s fift h in a ro w. T he o n ly rider to keep wi thi n sigJu o f : St a ten was H onda C R500- mon llled Kenn v Zahrt, wh o went 2-2 fo r seco nd o vera ll. Rand v Lewis a nd hi s KTM ca p tured th ird with a 3-3 tall y. In th e fir st 125cc mot a . Dubach quickl y took co m m and of th e race with th e lead in hi s possession after th e end of lap o ne . By th e second lap, Dubach still maintained th e lead , whil e Suzu ki rid er J im Tara nt ino and Canad ia n Allan Dyck (Ya m ) m oved int o second a nd thi rd . The top three rid ers held o n to th eir position s throughout th e moto, whil e Suzuki sup po rt rider Bobby Moore starte d his amazing drive through the pa ck a fter a poor start . By th e end o f th e firstJap, Moore was in 26th, but that didn 't la st for lo n g. He picked off seven riders during th e next lap, and three the next. Eventuall y, Moore found h is wa y into fourth before th e ch eckered flag . Honda riderTy Davisalso put in a strong come-from-behind ch a rge. After the first lap, he was three places behind Moore, and h e clawed and scratched his way into eighth. At the finish, it was Race Tech's Doug Dubach leading from start to finish, whi le Tarantino, Dyck, Moore, Drey Dircks (Han) and Rodn ey Harriger (Kaw) followed. Mota two was a nother Dubach runaway. The Yamaha rider once again had the lea d after th e end of lap one, however, Davis was second and Dyck was third. Moore didn't get off the line so hot and was 12th. For ha lf the race, Dyck pressured Davis unti l Dyck got what he wanted - seco nd place. After dropping back 10 third, Davis had Tarantino 10 contend with, but Davis stayed strong a n d didn 't let th e Suzuki rider by. Meanwhi le, Moore didn 't have as much lu ck moving up as he did in th e first mota. By the checkered flag, he improved his position by hall'. Dubach styled hom e for his second win of the day a h ead of Dyck, Davis, Tarantino. Dircks, Moore and Harriger. Honda rider Mik e Larson too k th e ea rly ad vantage in th e fir st 250cc Pro mo ta , while Manley. Yamaha rider Russ Wagem an , a nd Yam aha ride rs Cordon Ward a nd J ohnny Nelson pursued. Man ley kept close ta bs on Larson for th e first three laps before L arson suddenly d ropped back 10 sevent h, giving th e lead 10 Man ley. Wagem an settled into second bu t was ge tt ing hounded by Nelson. Du rin g lap five, Nelson found th e hot line aro u n d Wageman and sto le seco nd . Three la ps later. Wagem an dropped back o ne more positi on wh en Yamaha rider Scott Manning sho t by. With three laps 10 go, th e top five positions wer e Man ley, Nelson. Mannin g, Wageman an d Yamaha rider Andy Eson. Two laps from th e fini sh , Wageman got on th e ga s and found himself in second. whil e Nelson dropped back 10 fourth . On th e fin a l lap , Eson slipped by Nelson . making th e ' fini sh ing order Manley. Wageman, Manning, Eson and Nelson. Nelson jammed into th e lead a t th e sta rt of th e seco nd moto, but it didn 't last fo r lo ng. By lap two, Man ley had , o nce agai n, found hi s wa y into th e lead a hea d o f Nelson. Wagem an , Mann in g a nd Eso n , Wageman hung o n to third for five laps before ge ll ing pa ssed by Tara nt ino. wh o had slip ped by Eso n a la p ea rlier. H o wever, Eson di dn ' t let off. a nd he too m otored around Wageman. Wi th o ne lap 10 go, Eso n set a fter T arant in o . a nd ca me up wi th a pa ss. T he first500cc P ro mo to featured a d uel between bro th ers Ph il and Mik e Larson. Phil sta rted thin gs off with the ea rl y lea d, whil e M-Star-mounted Rodn e\: Sm i th foll ow ed . H owever. Mi ke La rso n had co n tro l o f seco nd by lap two a nd was hounding hi s bro th er. By th e third lap . Mike and slip ped by Phil taking o ver th e lead. but now it was Phil's turn to do th e p ressuri ng. For - the nex rc iw o, go- 'ro u n ds, Phil sta ved close until he h ad tak en o ver th e top spot o n la p six . A la p la ter , Phi l dropped back to fourth behind Mik e, Wageman and Sm ith . Mike Larson didn't find it any easier with h is brother back in fourth . T h is time it was Wageman who wa s doing th e pursuing. Sh ortl y after. Larson gave in and Wageman blew by taking over th e number on position . At the finish it was Wageman with th e win , while Mike a nd Phi l Larson took second and third. Smi th and Honda rider Will y Simons rounded ou t th e top five . The second mota featured another battle of th e Larsons. Once again it was Phi l jumping to th e earl y lead , while Mike closely followed . Wageman wa s third ahead of J im m y Ellis (Yam) and Jerome Heiberger (MStar). This time, however, thi ngs went a little differently up front . Ph il took command and never rel in quish ed h is lead to his brother Mike or any body else throug h o u t the mota. Mike he ld firm control over seco nd, while Simons worked his wa y into third after a sixth-place sta rt . At the finish, it was Phil Larson. Mike Larson, Simons, Smith, Ellis and Heiberger. The first Mini Expert mota saw Kawasaki rider Tallon Voh land jam into the lead a h ead of Paul Winn, Jimmy C addis (Suz), Dennis Stephenson (Ka w) and Lewis. Lewis, however, was th e one to watch as he qu ickly moved to the front of th e pack. Lewis disposed of Vohland during th e third lap for th e lead, and that was it. Lewis continued his romp a nd won the mota. Vohland took second. while Wirin . Caddis and Shane Trittler (Yam ) rounded out the top five. Mota two went mu ch smoo ther for Lewis - he had command of th e lead after th e first la p and never looked ba ck for a clean swee p . Winn sp ent th e wh ol e moto in second fo r seco nd overall, while third went 10 Vohland. Fourth and fifth fell to Trittler a nd Damon Bradshaw (Yam). Staten had no problems winning both Vet Pro m ot os, He led from start to finish eac h time out for the o vera ll. Hi s nearest competition was KTMmounted Randy Lewis, who went 2-2 for seco nd . A 3-3 sco re gave Kenn y Zahrt third, while flu-stri cken Randy Rodriguez finish ed 4-4. On ce again , a gigantic turnout of Sportsman ra cer s showed up for Saturday 's a ma teu r ra cing. and some of the da y's highlights was in th e 125cc Int ermed ia te division two class. wh ere Sunda y's Mini Expert winner , Kyle Lewis. emerged victorious. T we nty-eig h t riders lin ed th e sta rting gat e for th e fir st mota. a nd aft er a ll th e first-lap co m motio n. Lewi s wa s leading th e way . In close pursu it was Yamaha rider Mi ch ael Craig. Dennis Step he n son (Kaw), Low ell Thomson J r. (Kaw) , Kevin Maret (H o n) , Ada m G all egos (Ka w), Mike La rocco (Ya m) and J eff Mavbery (Yam ). Lew is dom in at ed throughout th e m ot o , n ever g iving a n in ch 10 Craig. Maret passed T homs o n an d Stephe nso n durin g th e first two laps for third ; however , L arocco was a lso o n th e m ove. O n th e fi na l lap . wi th Lewi s and Craig o u t in fro nt. Larocco closed in an d zap pe d Mar e! for third. A! th e fin ish , it was Lewi s. Crai g. La rocco and Maret. Fifth went 10 Ch ris Young.
