Pasca rella led early in the seco nd m oto before getti ng passed by Sirn rneu and \\' inn. Winn conti nued hi s drive a nd surp rised Sirnrneu when the Ya maha rid er sn uck by for the lead . The two swapped positions a few times, bu t crossing the checkered flag , th e lead was Si rnm etr's. Winn took seco nd ahead of Pa sca rell a , and Trittler. A reco rd 835 sportsman riders filled Q uail Can yon to begin their q uest for points in th e eigh t-ra ce Amateur series . Two tracks were used to expedite th e number o f rnotos needed to accommodate all o f the rid ers before ni ghtfall. With very few minor hitches, promot er Stu Peters a nd hi s crew engineered a most suc cessfu l event. Honda rider and 80cc Expert sta r, Kyle Lewis, wo n both 125ccIntermediate Division One motos, but not without some stiff co m pe titio n from another 80cc Expert , Ri ck Simmer (H on) in the first round. Kevin Maret (H on) got the hol eshot, but Lewis and Simmet pulled ahead, leaving Mar et to defe nd third-place wit h Jeff Reynol ds (H on) kn ocking a t th e door. Reynol ds and Maret trad ed pos itio ns for two laps , but on the fourth lap, Mar et reclaimed h is third -pl ace po sition and held Reyno lds o ff to th e finish . Lewi s opened up a seven-second lea d by the fifth la p a nd kept tha t margin between h imself and Simmet .. ~.. for th e last-lap dash to th e flag . Mik e Craig (Yam) fought hi s way th ro ug h the field after a slow start to round out the top five, Lewis was swiftest off the line at the start o f moto two , with Reynolds breathing heavily down hi s neck. Craig p icked up seco nd- p lace and Simmer acq u ired third. with Lo well Thompson (Kaw) movin g into fourth. Cr ai g closed in o n Lewi s for th e last th ree laps, but wa s not able to ca tch th e h ard-ch arging, FMF-sponsored front ru n ne r. Cagiva rider Mike Young earned th e fifth o vera ll spot with a 9-6, whil e Alan Pi erce (Ka w) was fourth with a 6-5. Cr ai g was third with 5-2, a nd Simmer took seco nd with hi s 2-3 finish . Kaw asaki-m o unt Chris Radzinski led Div ision T wo o u t o f th e ga te, fol lo wed by Arizo n a rider Brian Pryor (Ka w) and Dennis Stephen son (Kaw). By the seco nd go -arou nd Stephen son was leading th e pack with Radzin ski dropping to third and Pryor movi ng into second. The trio rode the rem a in ing fou r la ps in th a t position wi th Travis Ro bert son (Yam) takin g a fourth-p lace fin ish a nd Dann y Pa ladino (Ka w), capturing a fifth. The seco nd mo to was a battle between Pryo r and Step he nson. On the white-flag lap Stephen son took the lead and p repared to ta ke a not her first. In lo rtu na telv for h im fat e h ad o the r p la ns, a nd h e went fro m first to 25t h. Pryor jumped into th e lead but had a momen tary setbac k wh en h e cras h ed right before taking the flag. He wa s th e o n ly rid er of th e day to ta ke th e ch eckers in fir st while pushing hi s bike across th e lin e. That ex tra effort ea rn ed Pryor the overa ll win with a 2-\. Steve Furuya (Yam) was second wit h 6-2, with Paladino garnering the third sID! with 5-3. Radzinski was fou rth wi th 3-5, and Aaron Gin n took a fif th wit h h is 9-4 finis h. Yama ha-mounted Ch ris Youn g easi ly took command of bo th 125cc Intermedia te Divisio n Three motos. By th e fourt h la p, h e had bui lt up a secu re 10-seco nd lead , while behi nd him seco nd p lace was being occupied hy Tracy Bach m an (Ka w) fo llowed by Brian Belew (H on), Gary Sai lors (Kaw), an d Jeff Mabery (Ya m ). Sailors sl ip ped back ro take th e flag in third, .. . Jimmy Lewis (Ka w) hung in to fin ish fo urth. Ti m McClintock (Kaw) fough t hi s way u p from a m idpack sta rt to ta ke fifth . Yo ung bo lted o ff the lin e to start moto two out in front of the 30-rider fiel d. Jo hn Flores (Kaw ) ro de the entire race in seco nd unti l the last lap when he was overtaken by Ma bery and forced down to finis h th ird . Mike McLain (Kaw ) was fourth and Lewis was fifth. Young cruised to the overall wi n , with Mabery 's 2-2 g leaning h im second. Lewis picked up third with his 4-5, and McLain was fourt h with 8-4. Justin O tto (Yam), completed the top five with a 6-9. The first division of 250cc Intermediates was led for all six laps by Kawasaki-mounted Darren Gallagher. Steve Rich ards (Yam) was tyi ng u p th e second sp o t u nt il J oh n Garcia (H on) cha rged up to nose him o ut o n th e fifth lap. Aaron G inn rode to a fo urt h-pl ace fini sh and Da ll en McKenn y (H on) was fifth . Gallagher was again the fastest o ff th e line at the start of moto two, fol lowed by Steve West (Yam) and Ran dy R ush (H on) , Garcia got a fou rth -place start, worked his way up one posi tion eac h lap, a nd by the end of lap fou r h e had tak en over the lead a nd took th e moto win for the overall. Gallagher's 1-2got him second , with Chuck Whitmore (Suz) taking th ird (6-3). McKenny was fourth with a 5-4, and Richa rds too k a fifth wi th 3-7. T im Wh itlock (H on) got the holeshot to sta rt th e first 250cc Divisio n T wo mo to , bu t a fall en rid er brought o u t th e red flag. and th e riders reg ro u pe d to try it one more time. Ka wa sa ki rid er Alan Pierce got the second start holeshot, with Mike Craig a nd Reyno lds in hot pursuit. Pierce suc cumbed to th e intense pressure being infl icted by Reynol ds and surrendered the lead o n th e third lap. Craig too k advan tage o f th e sit uation and al so sho t by Pi erce on the fourt h lap. T im Whitlock wa s sittin g back in fou rt h a n d decided it was h is turn to p a ss P ierce. He rode right on P ierce's fende r for two laps, but Pierce withstood th e th reat and he ld on to his third-pl ace sta n ding until the chec kered flag came out. Pierce go t the secon d-mote start, but Reynol d s aga in had the lead by the en d of th e fir st lap . Cr aig closed in 0 11 P ierce and got by him on th e th ird lap, leaving Whitlock to pressure Pierce o nce more. Pierce fin all y fell p rey to Wh itl ock 's moves a n d dropped to fo urth , with Kevin Maret finishi ng fifth in hoth rnot os for fift h overa ll. P ierce too k a fourth (3-4), Wh itlock was thi rd (4-3), Craig second (2-2), an d Reyn o lds (I- I) too k the overall. Reynol ds was the man of th e day , dominating the 250cc Int ermediate Division T wo m otos, as well as both the 500cc Intermedi at e Divi sion One rnoto s. He led th e rumbling pack of 500cc ma ch in es out o f th e ga te. with Steve Pia u o n i (H o n) in pursuit for a lap un til he slid down in a co rne r and let Loren Barrett (H o n ) ta ke over seco nd pl ace. Reyno lds cro ssed th e line with no other riders in sight. Barrett took second by half a wh eel in front of third-place finisher. Pi a ttoni. Robert Stone (H o n) was fourth and Mark Par kerson (H on) completed the fastest five. Mo to two was a reca p o f th e fir st , wi th Reynolds motoring into th e fro nt an d wo rki ng to a mas a 20seco n d lead , a long wit h th e o vera ll victory . Piattoni settled into the number -two spot an d bagged seco nd overall , with Timothy Beid mad (Hon) in third.
