This was th e sixth o vera ll victory for th e Desert Husq varnal Spectro Oil slH allm an R a cin g- spon sored XCSOO rider this season, "( Pa u l) Bennett go t o u t a hea d, bu t I took it easy o n th e first (rough) 30 miles. Powers, w ho would ha ve snatched the number one pl a te ha d he caught Swee tland, thought, "Championship or no, I' ve got to stop," a nd got Sims off the tra ck and stabi lized . Early leader Paul Bennett (M-S ) lost th e lead wh en h is rad ia tor mounts start ed go ing away and he slo wed. Bennett had been go ing for it beca u se an overall victory was hi s o n ly cha nce to m ove up from hi s number three ra n king in th e series points race. Sweetl and a nd Sims got by wh en Benn ett slowed. But Benn ett 's woe s weren' t over. A non -ra cing ATV pulled into hi s path a nd th e pai r co llided. Neith er was hurt , but Bennett 's bike took th e brunt o f th e i m p ac t, - a n d a fter repairs h e had to pl ay ca tchu p th e rest o f th e wa y, finish in g sevent h overa ll, fifth O pen Expe rt, just over n ine m inutes back . H e'll wear number three in '86. Duan e Su m me rs (Cag) wa s th e o n ly 200cc Expe rt to fini sh , co mi ng in a t eig h th overa ll. The 250cc Am ateur, H onda rider J oe J ohnson , did it by just 33 seconds over series cla ss p oints winner Tim Leeh e (KT M) to round o u t th e top 10. . Then ca me th e p ack. Seni or Expert Rob Beggs (KT M) took hi s cla ss win a fter a go od batt le with Jami e Dr yden (Hus) for m ost o f th e race, but Dryden never mad e chec k five. Open Novices J eff Rogers (C ag) a nd Greg Campbell (H us) fought it out all th e way , with Rogers taking th e win. At 15th overall , Mini Amateur winner K.C , Kirk finished h is fir st p ointto -point event. Kirk liked th e distance, but was glad it wasn't much longer because hi s rea r sprocket wa s just a bo u t gone. And a t ll 2th overa ll, Lee Bali cki (KT Ml won the Over-TheH ill -G ang di vision.
