Richardson doubles at Mosier ValleyMX By Marc Jenkins EULESS, TX., DEC. 13 Kawasaki rider Carroll Richa rdson dominated p rofessio na l motocross co m petition today a t Mosier Valley , ridi n g to clean 20 sweeps in both the 125 and 250cc P ro divisions. Rich ardso n grabbed the h olesho t in the first 125cc P ro rnoto, leading Rich H a lstea d (Ka w) and D.L. Wood (Yam) into th e first tu rn. By th e m id dl e of the race, Rich ard son an d H al stead had p u lled away fro m the pack, while Bryan Abern at hy worked h is way through traffic and into third p lace to set the finishing order. R ich a rdson a nd H a ls tead bo th ga ted well and put d istan ce on th e pack early in the second moto, wh ich became a lmost an insta nt rep lay of th e first race . Abernathy suffered a poor start and was forced 10 work h is way through the pack 10 earn thi rd. Halstead and Richardson dominated action again in the first 250cc Pro mota. Halstead pressured Richard son for the lead in th e early stages of the race , bu t Rich ardson q uickly .turned on the gas and motored away. Wood worked his Yamaha past Ro bbie Van Winkel (Kaw), bu t had to settle for third as th e front runners were long go ne . Wood grabbed the holeshot in th e second 250cc m o ta , wi th Van Win kel in tow and Rich ardson finally p laying catch-up. Ha lstead fell in the first turn, but recove red quick ly to salvage fo urth pl ace. Richard son got by both Wood a nd Van Wi nkel on th e th ird la p . H al stead th en passed a fading Van Winkel to mo ve into the top three. Wood pressured Richardso n a ll the way to the finis h line but . cou ld n ever make the pass. In 250cc Intermedia te action, Murphy Capers (Yam) survived two mi dpack sta rts to wi n th e class with a pe rfect I-I score. His to ughest competi tion in the first mota came from Scott Scharnbacher (Northeast Cycle / M-Star), an d Dra ke Moore (C-A). Schambacher looked in co ntrol of the moto u nt il th e la te stages when Capers began passing riders in cl umps. He eventually go t by bo th Moore and Schambacher to take the win. Even tho ugh Schambacher go t a good start in the seco nd rnoto, he surrendered control to Capers mi dway through th e race w hen h e cras hed hard and was unable to restart. The ba ttl e for second was between Moore and Honda -mounted Scott Freeman , with Moore ge tting th e nod at the checkered flag. T he day's tigh test raci ng came in the O pen Nov ice class, where Rich ard Ross (Ha n) , J oey Dorsett (Parts Unlim ited -Hon ) a nd Casey 'Ba va ig h (Ya m) ba ttl ed j ust a few feet apart for the to p spot duri ng most of bo th motos.
