Reaching che ck o ne first was Sweetla nd, fo llowed closely by th e first 250(( rider; Ri ch O 'Brien (H o n), Phil Means was ridi ng very ag g ressive ly and had moved up into th e 10 1' 10 by th is poin t. At the end o f th e first lap, Sw ee tl a n d h a d s tre tc he d hi s l ead a s O 'Brien's partner , G ary Kep p le (Ho n ) took o ff in pursuit , sti ll ho lding second ov e rall. Th e team o f St eve Walker a n d T om Moen (H a n) were runn ing th ird ov era ll , seco nd O pen, foll owed closel y by th e M eans tea m in fourth overa ll, Lap tw o found Jimm y Means pa ssing Sw eetland for th e lea d . These tw o teams pulled clear o f th e rest of th e field as th e Walker/M oen team were in a co m fo rta ble th ird. The nex t few laps found some o f th e cl o sest raci ng o f th e yea r as th e M eans team a nd Swee tla nd excha nged th e lead se vera l tim es a nd we re never m ore th an a few seco n ds a part. Finally, with o n ly tw o laps remaining, th e Means team began to pull away to an easy o vera ll win. Sw eetland wa s tiring a nd fell off the pace slig h tly when hi s bi ke had a slig ht seizure one la p from the fin ish . H e sti ll fin ish ed a co m fo r ta ble second overa ll. Finishi n g thi rd o verall was th e tea m of Walker/Mo en after run ning th ird a lmos t a ll d a y. The 250cc ra ce was won by th e team o f J ohn Bird a nd J ohn Ma rk in g (KTM) a t fourth overa ll, After ru nn ing eigh th o n the first la p , they m ov ed u p to fou rt h o n la p two a nd held th is posi tion for n early the entire race.
