DEC. 2 Willow Springs International Raceway -owner Bill Huth has removed a potentially dangerous formation of rock on the outside of turn five, with tbe belp of Dunlop Tire Company. For over 20 years the track had wound down off the Budweiser Bal· cony and around this rock formation. But at an AMA Superbike National in 1983, Sam McDonald crashed entering turn five and his bike hit the mound. launched imo the air and sailed over Wes Cooley's head. Huth decided something had to be done. HuLh first tried placing haybales in from of the rock formation; but Huth said crashes in the corner increased. so he had the haybales placed in bright orange nylon bags, which warned riders and also kept the haybales dry. Huth felt funher improvements were needed, so, with sponsorship from Dunlop, contrdcted heavy equipIVem to rip and tear tile rock formation away. The orange-wrapped haybales will serve as a temporary restraim to keep bikes crashed at the entrdnce'to turn five from re-emering Lhe track at the exit of turn; in the future, a catch fence may be installed. This isn't the first change Huth has made in an eHon to create one of the safest racing facilities in the country. In 1983, Huth (ag-din with Dunlop sponsorship) moved back an embankment in turn two, earning recognition from a riders-safety group in the form of a Jon Woo Memorial Safety Project Award for Excellence in Trdck Safety.
