(adveniemem) ANAHEIM SUPERCROSS '86 TRIPLE HEADER Bikes, quadraeers, & Off-Road Cars T"ftYO Separate StadiuDl Tracks AnaheiDl StadiuDl - Jan. 18th - 7 PM Anaheim Supercrou '86 full offirsts Anaheim Supercross '86 blasts open the 1986 AMA·sanctioned supercross series with the first race on the INSPORT tour at Anaheim Stadium - two weeks earlier than usual this year - Saturday night, january 18! It launches a new generation of supercr05S - a bold breakthrough - and packs the season premier full of firsts! The '86 kickoff evem is more than just a race - it is a triple-header: First time to see '86 supercrossers on production bikes; first round of the Suzuki Quad Racer National Championship; and first time to see wild Baja Formula· 10 cars compete on a totally separate track right in the stadium! Imagine the action of II 250cc and 125cc supercross races, two Quad races. and an off·road car race - aU in one night! The track itself is going to be another first for supereross at Anaheim. In the past, the track building has been restricted to certain areas of the stadium playing £ield. But this year, the emire floor will be used. The supereross track will be 10% longer and wider than last year. And this also made possi ble the design of two tracks: A supereross course and a separate Quad Racer and car course! In addition each of the top seven riders have been invited to design a new Anaheim Supercross obstacle. David Bailey, Broc Glover, Bob Hannah, and Rick Johnson already have sem in their obstacle designs. The resulting track is going to be spectacular. Plus, a COOlest is being held to . select the best track obstacle designed by a fanl A mind-blowing motorsports bash for the fans and riders is in the works. Anaheim Supera'oss '86 promises to be the greatest season-opener ever! Rider roster The supercross kickoff at the home of the Rams and the Angels boasts a starstudded rider line-up. See Bob "Hurricane" Hannah blow into Anaheim in his lirst recem appearance on a Suzuki, along with teammates George Holland, ScOll Burnworth and A.j. Whiting. This is the lirsttime that all riders will be on production bikes, so you'll see closer racing than ever before. Watch the muscle of Team Honda's johnny O'Mara, David Bailey and new member Rick johnson, who has cbaJ· lenged National Supereross Champion jelf Ward. johnson claimed that Kawasaki-moumed Ward won at the Coliseum by sandbagging, and he is out for Ward. The 125cc National MX Champion, Ron Lechien, has also switched factory teams this season and joins Ward aboard the green machi nes. Team Yamaha is piloted by 500cc National MX Champion Broc Glover and '85 Rodil Trophy Championship titleholder jim Holley. Holley is hot, and Glover will be back on track following an injured wrist. Can Glover ace-outthe lield with a repeat victory at Anaheim this year? Broc has placed his bets with a rad track obstacle that could load the dice in his favor (see Broc's obstacle). New race format The 1986 InsportlAMA format is a single-row start andone-moto final. Fans have decisively indicated that this format - with a heat, semi, and final - is more exciting. SMC has also applied for sanction of an '86 format that allows lans to see the top riders race three times! In the 250cc class. 60 riders will compete in four, IS-rider qualilying heats, two semi-final races, one last chance con- OlI_T_ =:> (,0 00 0') brand new '86 Suzuki Quadrunner. At the end of these heats, 21 of the best supercrossers will engage in a raging 20- . lap, sudden-death, main event baule to the checker"" flag.. The 125cc class will feature 40 riders in two qualifying heats of 20 riders each and one £inal main event. In all, there will be 100 riders going for the glory in no less than II rounds of supereross competition throughout the evening. Track obstacles designed by riders and fans To make this track the best ever, Stadium Motorsports Corp. is covering the entire Anaheim field with plywood and dirt 10 make the supercross track longer and wider for easier passing. They're also adding some killer obstacles I Chances are that fans will see all the riders in the air at once more than a few times. The infamous Insanity Ridge jump makesriders' hearts skipa beatas they gas it up a 60-foot run toa treacherous, sharp seven-foot-high drop-off. Gary Bailey, the Professor of Motocross, has planned two awesome obstacles that should make even the best riders sweat. One of these is a big set of double jumps right at the beginning of tough whoop-de-doos. In another whoop-de-doo section, the riders will have to get up enough speed to climb a 10-foot-high, nearly-vertical wall at the end! This tough course also includes those radical triple and quad jumps built on the two straights right after the start. Longer. wider track - 50% more wild obstacles When the entire track is completed, there will be 50% more obstacles than wbat you see now, Why? SMC has invited Rick johnson, Broc Glover, Bob Hannah, jim Holley, Ron Lechien, David Bailey, jeff Ward, and johnny O'Mara to design their own jump. The track will be so tough that SMC is convinced that not all of the top riders will make it around the track the first time without falling or stopping. . And here's a challenge for the fans: Send SMC a winning obstacle design and it will be builtin the Anaheim track! To enter, send your design on plain white paper to "Supercross Obstacle Design Contest," cI0 Stadi urn Motorsports Corp., 22941 Mill Creek Drive. Laguna Hills, CA 92653; entries must be postmarked by january I. The winner's picture and a professional artist's sketch of the winning obstacle will be published in the Anaheim program. Design your obstacle today! Lots of bikes. Quads and· off-road cars With the e';tra space created by covering the entire Anaheim field, there is enough room to build a separate off-road race track, and to bring the fans more action. Twelve wild Baja Formula 10 cars will run in two practice heats and a final at separate times on their own separate track. The new Anaheim track design allows for a 30-foot-wide car track that winds in and out of less severe obstacles. The only shared portions of the twO courses are the start - which must be smooth anyway - and the places where one track crosses the other. The cars simply cannot make it over the lOugh supercross obstacles; and the supereross track is, in fact, larger, wider, longer, and lOugher than the 1985 model. You will see 12, all-out Formula 10 race machines - 3000 pounds of flying sheetmetal hurtling through the air, clashing axle-to-axle. Top drivers invited and confirmed at press time are: the Arciero Brothers, Greg George, Bob Gordon, Steve Kelly, and Pancho Weaver; alsoex-motorcycle legends like Tommy Croft, jim Fishback, and Marty Tripes. Invited and expected to allend are Ivan Stewart and Steve Millen. Radical Style Jump Contest By audience response, you will pick the winning rider in tbe Radical Style jump Contest!
