But Ellis' 4-2 wins placed him third overall to Wright's 2-3 wins for second overall behind Dashiell. Former nat track National Champion Mert Lawwill ran his first moLOcross race today to sweep the Old Timers' Junior class field with his 1977 Maico. Starting from a sixthplace position out of the gates in the firt moLO, Lawwill got the hang of it and picked 0(( Master class rider Gene Hroksky and Intermediate class rider John Geer to take the thirdplace spot behind Master class riders Steve Macho and Paul Bostrom by the third lap. Lawwill kept the leaders honest by dogging them around the laps, but was never able LO reel them in. In the second moLO, Lawwill was midpack at the start in the mixedclass race. Drawingon his experience from the first moLO, Lawwill took the Iine set by the Master class racers and lapped his Junior class competitors to take a well-establishcd overall first-place win in his class. Olson awesome at Perris MJC By Bob Alloy PERRIS, CA, DEC. 7 Recent rain offered a real challenge LO 41 red-jerseyed Old Timers who met for the last time this year at the Perris Raceway motocross, with Marvin Olson taking the overall win with his 1-2 tally. Mastcr John Rice blasted into the lead and held it for two laps in moto one, until Olson charged into rirst place, pUlling his Yamaha through the checkered flag 10 laps later. Bob Dahlgren, on a Honda, took second. Moto two saw Jim Beltnick take the lead and go wire-to-wire for the win. Olson started midpack, but moved up to second at the finish line, and the overdll wa his. Expert George Spe-aring found a winning line in practice, and g'dssed his Husky into first place in moLOS one and two for first overall. AI Smith di played some aggressive smooth riding, taking second in moLO one, while Asker Lamkjaer started almost last but worked up to third at the finish. In moto two, Bob Beasley captured second place. Bob De Miranda pi loted his Honda four-stroke into third. Amateur Fred Collins won both motos after taking the win on the last lap in moto one and waiting until two laps from the finish line in moto two. Bill Misener, who grabbed the holeshot in moto one, went 2-2 for econd overall. Skip Skinner, on a Yamaha. aggre sively moved up to third pot in moto one and two. Don Bourdt"du led the Novices to the finish line despite a midmoto crdsh. Jack Alien g'dssed his YZ 125 into the number-two pot in moLO one. Moto two saw Jack Allen blast through the checkered nag in first place while Ralph Dickson, wllo had the holeshot took second. ovice B, Larry Escamilla won both motos after going wire-to-wire for first overall. Darnell returns to .win at CMC Carlsbad By Kathy Nemecek CARLSBAD, CA, DEC. 8 It was clear sailing for Suzuki- mounted Russ Darnell in Vet Masters class action during Continental Motosport Club (CMC) race action at Carlsbad Raceway -as he took LOp honors in that class after I-I class moLO finishes. During first moLO action in the combined Vet and Junior class race, Darnell led the Vets out of the gate with Mark McAdams on a Yamaha and Kawasaki-mounted Frank Thomason following. Darnell soon established a commanding lead but the real race developed for second and third place between McAdams, Thomason and Dean Dloughy. The three diced and traded places the entire moLO, with McAdams finally scoring second place and Dloughy rounding out the top three. Darnell again nabbed the holeshot during the start of the second moLO and easily sprinted to the finish line LO take another moLO victory for first overall. McAdams repeated his first moLO performance by capturing another second place. Thomason nelled third place for third overall. In the hotly contested 250cc Pro class, Yamaha-mounted Vin e Warren captured 2-1 moLO fini he for first overall, while Mike AntichiHe on his Kawasaki, and Gary DePillo on his Yamaha netted second and third overall. Suzuki-mounted Chuck Whitmore captured top honors in Intermediate action by virtue of his 1-2 moLO finishes. During the first moLO action of the combined Pro and Intermediate class action, Alan Barker (Hus) and Whitmore sprinted out of the g'dte, avoiding a spill that detained the other riders. Barker, however, could not hold 0(£ a hard-charging Whitmore, who soon established a commanding lead to easily capture the checkers. Suzuki-mounted Gilbert Valdez neued a well-deserved second 59
