Compressing an event such as the Motocross des Nations into 60 minutes of videotape is no mean feat. After all, just the three 30-minute mOlos themselves would easily fill 100 minutes of tape. But Gary Bailey, in his videotape entitled 1985 Motocross des Nations, has succeeded in weeding out the uneventful and brought us a tightlyedited and emenaining depi.ction of the West German-hosted race, which, in case you haven't heard, the American tea m woil for me fifth year in a row. The" Professor" begins his video essay with panoramic views of the picture-postcard town of Schwaebisch-Hall, which served as me American base of operations. Then he takes us to the race site in the hillsides of the village of Gaildorf, beginning with close-ups of each of the American team members - David Bailey, Ron Lechien and Jere Ward - as they signed autographs for me German fans. Aller a five-minute recap of the elaborate and colorful opening ceremonies, Bailey goes straight to the mainstay of the tape - nearly 45 minutes of action-packed race footage. He has beautHully photographed (from many angles) the tense ballie among nations at the head of the pack, which involved Americans Ward and Bailey, 500cc World Champion David Thorpe of Great Britain, 250cc World Champion Heinz Kinigadner of Austria and Dutchman Kees ven der Ven, an order which changed £rom lap to lap in the early stages of moLOS one and two. For Lechien fans, the tape is a must; his wild ride through me pack in each moLO on a l25cc machine, picking off the 250 and 500cc riders in droves, is in itself nearly worth the price of admission. Lechien's tussle with fellow 125cc rider Davey Slrijbos of Holland is among me highlights. Bailey has also captured the mood change - from somewhat somber LO ecstatic - in the winning American team from the outdoor victory celebration (held to satisfy the needs of journalists on a tight deadline) LO the "real thing," wJ:tich was held in the huge trackside beer tem later in the evening. If there is a sturn bling block in the tape, it has to be in the total lack of rider interviews; we would gladly gi ve up some of the race footage to hear a few choice words [rom the riders.
