On th e white flag lap Gonza les too k over Stuart's posi tion for th ird , wh ile Lea was taki ng the checkered flag for h is I-I victo ry wh ile Smith went 2-2. Hanson h ad trouble o n th e whiteflag lap, so Carter g ladly took over second with Bob Ma rshall 's CR250 in third. West never looked back a t the actio n going o n behind him as he took th e win leading every lap. Second moto action saw West co ming in fast from th e east. West quickl y rounded o ff th e sharp first tu rn and took off with th e lead. Ha nson wa s in second, followed by T albot's Yamaha. Wh en th e " Ha m mer" went down tryin g to make a move on West a t the finish-line jump, T albot took ove r second with Carter in th ird. In th e I25cc Intermediates, Robert Reed , o n th e KX,led the fir st la p , but th at lead would fall a part a fter o ne la p to Jack Ricks on another KX. With Reed in seco n d a nd Chris Pritche tt on a CR in third , Ricks wo u ld n o w have to be concerned abou t the fast moving Pritch ett takin g ove r second. After four laps, Ri cks would g ive u p th e lead to Pritch ett 's Honda. T he seco nd moto showed Reed wo u ld agai n lead the pack on th e first lap with Pr itchett hot on h is kn obbies. By th e en d o f th e seco nd lap Ri cks cooled Reed 's h ot knobbies and led the rem ainin g five laps, wi th Prit che tt an d Reed to worry a bo ut second and third . T he tra ck , wh ich had been under three in ch es o f snow th e p revi ous Monda y, offered exce lle nt tracti on an d no du st. Sa ltzma n led Ron Christner' s O pen Yamaha to the first chec k wh ile Su mmer s trailed in 14th posi tion. By chec k two on th e first loo p , Sa ltzma n ma intained a sligh t lead over Christner a nd Su m me rs had moved up to n inth. The top two positions rema ined u nchanged at check th ree wi th the hard-ch arging Summers tak ing over six th. Christner d ro p ped Sa ltzma n to seco nd at the co mpletion of the firs t loop and Su mmers continued his ch arge by raci ng into fifth p lace. . The beginner race was a duel between th e Yamaha O pen ,en try of G eorge Penning ton and th e O pen H onda o f T im G omez.
