Ben nett defin itel y loo ked ready to race aga in since brea kin g h is leg a t last summer's St roh Sp ringfiel d Mile. In th e first m ot o it was Marty Zir bel a boa rd th e Town Ce n ter Yamaha g ra bbing a big ho lesh o t o ver R ya n Fisher (Ga rner's Yamaha ), Bennett, Ri ck Msci ch owski (Hon)an d th e rest o f th e th under ing Pr os. On th e backstra ig ht Bennett m o ved into seco nd a n d j ohn P otter (Han) mo ved to fi fth ahead o f R o bert Frohs (Han) . On lap three Zirbel wa s sideways do wn the backstrai g ht when hi s bike bogged a n d Ben n ett cli p pe d hi m , sen di ng the Sidew inder 's jun ior Cha m p 10 th e ground. In turns three-fo ur, Frohs lost th e front end of h is bike, a lso sen ding h im 10 th e din; by n ow th e yellow flags were o u t. Zir bel was slow gett ing up whi le Bennett cru ised to th e wi n , foll owed by Fish er, Msci chows ki, Potter , a nd Frohs. Frohs went down as Bennett worked o n Fish er fo r two la p s before m ak ing a pass stic k. Benn ett looked for Zirbel , who was not to be ca ugh t this time, wh il e Fis her wa nted secon d back. Fi sh er tried passes a lmos t everyw he re, inclu d in g a tu rn three-four in side move that a lmos t took Bennett o u t. In the back , L yons an d Potter were havi n g a race o f th eir o wn, tradin g p laces severa l times. At th e fi n ish it wa s Zirbel , in first , with Bennett in seco nd , ta king th e o vera ll. Fi sh er , Msci ch o wski a nd Po tier rounded o u t th e top five, fo llo wed by L yo n s a nd Frohs. In the 500cc Ama teur cla ss, you nger brother Rex Fishe r led john Christ ian sen, j. Terry , Paul Endres and Lyon s, a ll a board Yam ahas. T h e en tire pack ran u ltra close, each rider look ing for a n o pe n in g o n the o ther. The o rder remained th e same to the ch eckered flag. In rn oto two, T erry took th e lead, fo ll owed by C hris ti a n sen, Fi sher, L yo ns a nd Endres. T erry a lmost lost it in tu rn th ree, b u t h eld on for o ne more lap as Christiansen'passed h im o n the o u tside o f th e back stra ight away . Endres h ad a su sp ens ion prob\em tha t p ut him o u t fo r the rest o f ' th e moto . Mea nwhile, Fisher wa s pressuring T erry, trying to get by going in to each co rner. Finall y, Fisher pa ssed Terry o n th e o u tside o f the backstraight, right where Christia n sen had passed earlier. Fish er went after Christi ans en, needi n g ano th er win for the o vera ll , but th ere just wa sn ' t enough time or lap s left.
