Spencer WILS EYVILLE , CA, NOV. 10 ISDE Vets Jeff Irwin , Ch arl ie Halcomb and Da ve Bertram took the top three spots over a field of 90 riders who braved th e dr iving sno w and freezin g temperatures at th e annual D-36/ AMA Wilseyville Cl assic Hare Scra m bles. Vet Expert and former flat trac k ace Eddie Ed gyed was first l2 5cc Junior an d fou rth overa ll, a nd Lance McPhee was top 250cc Expert, rounding out the top five overall. Leading th e Expert to ur out of cam p was Ken McKenzie on his KTM , wi th Husky rider Ha lco m b ou t to show why he got the n umber one cross co u ntry pl at e. The snow continued to fall for the first two laps and then tu rned into freezing rain , wh ich really made for a slipper y time. " In fact, it sta rted to sno w, big time, just after th e start o f th e Novice race and the power in th e a rea went a wa y, a lt h ough everyo ne was a lrea dy o n generators. Naughton soars at Firebird MX By Mike Ross CHAND LER, AZ, NOV. 24 Robert Naughton topped the Expert class today in round three of the Arizona State Championship at Firebird motocross wi n n in g both motos on a 250 Honda . Brian Hayes (Bel-Ray/U nited Motosports ) holesh ot th e first moto on hi s open H onda with Bobby White (H on) a nd Naughton right behind him . Naughton d ove underneath White an d H a yes early in th e first lap to take fir st as Drey Dircks (Su n n yslope H onda/Lancer ) moved ahead of Wh ite to tak e seco nd. By lap three Hayes was back to th ird with White, Dircks a nd Naughton ahead. On lap four Hayes cras he d hard , dropping him back severa l po sitions. Naughton 's lead was secu re, but White (Sunnyslope H onda / AXO /USA Sport) wa s pressu rin g Dircks fo r seco n d wh ile Blose (Yo u ng Cycle Suppl y) lurked in fourth some d istan ce back . At the h alfwa y poi nt in the l O-lap swee ps ta kes, it was sti ll Naughton, Dircks, Wh ite, but Lee Parker 's 125 YZ (Max ima /Yama ha World ) go t aro und Blose. Whi te was desperate in thi rd a nd tired several ti mes to pass Dircks as th ey j u m ped the dou ble sid e-b y-side . Wh ite fina ll y saw dayligh t a n d moved into seco nd on lap n in e. At th e checkered flag Na u gh ton, Wh ite an d Dircks made it a threesome. Dircks' finish ga ve him a win in th e l25cc cla ss and Ha yes ma na ged a thi rd in the Open class . Th ird in the 250s went to Blose. In moto two, Naughton roc keted into th e lead an d ne ver look ed back . White was in seco n d an d Ha yes in third a t th e fir st turn , but on la p two Blose had found hi s wa y into secon d. Hayes, hurting after a mote- on e crash, dropped bac k o n la p three. Wh ite moved ahead o f Blose an d Dircks on lap five wi th Par ker getti ng Davis in fifth . Na ug h to n took the checkered flag with Wh it e a n d Dircks right beh ind . Fo u rt h overa ll went to Palmer, Dircks' secon d overall gave him th e l25cc cro wn while Parker got second place in that class.
