At th is tim e, Sanch ez found th e hot lin e aroun d Lewi s and too k co ntro l o f th e lead , but Lewi s wasn ' t th rough yet. Lewi s stayed clos e to Sa nchez, a nd a fte r receiving th e wh ite flag , Lewi s mad e a fin al attempt for th e lead a nd succeeded. The win went to Lewi s, followed bv Sa nchez a nd Rol and T hom pson: Sa nc hez capt ur ed th e h ol e-sh ot a t th e sta rt o f the seco nd moto, but crashed short ly af ter , han d in g th e lead ove r to Lewi s, who eas ilv went on to ta ke the win . One other rider tried it once and sca red h im self so bad yo u co u ld see hi s wh it e knuckles rig h t through hi s glo vesl Wageman went do wn briefly in th e m iddle of the race a nd Sim o ns slipp ed into seco nd , m oving up im med ia tely to pressure Zahrt. Zahrt ca me o u t o f th e ga te again to lead mota two , with Sim ons on h is ta il right from th e start. Simons pressu red Zahrt co ns ta nt ly. an d as th e race wore on, Zahrt ap pea red to be tiring. With enou gh tim e, Sim ons wo ul d inevi ta bly pa ss. Shortly a fter th e midrace sign , that time ca me an d Simons took th e lead. Zahrt made a few a tte m p ts to get it back but ran o u t of stea m amd was forced to sett le for seco nd . Simons and Zahrt finished first an d second overall. The Open Pro race was a Willy Simons benefit as h e put his Honda into an immediate lead in both money motos and drove rig h t to th e cashier's window. Dave Welty celebrated his 21st birthday by taking his Honda to a solid secon d in the first moto after some brief ch allenges from Eric Marnoch (AXO ). Welty started moto two in second again. but john Oatner wanted to break the Honda domination a nd stuffed his O'Neal Yamaha in front of Welty in midrace to take secon d . It wasn 't good enough, as Welt y o u tpointed h im to get secon d money. In 125ct Pro ac tio n, Lance johnso n led off the line in m oto one, with Kiedrowski nipping at his sprocket. johnson's and Kiedrowski 's Kawasaki were in th e same groove for the next fo ur laps, ne ver more th an a bikelength a part. At th e first turn of lap five. Kied ro wsk i dropped to th e inside and scooted past j ohnson to ta ke th e lead. Kiedrowski bega n adding distance immediately, and to good use, because he fell in th e last lap not 50 yards from the fin ish. H e had enough marg in to juimp u p an d still win . johnso n kep t seco nd a fter fig h ting off a de termi ned challe nge from Pat H ax ton, on a no th er Kawa saki. Kiedrowski had a disastrous start in moto two. co m in g last off th e line. jim Simons co nti n ued th e Kawasaki d om ination by running in what seemed to be a comfortable first. Kiedrowski began steadily moving up until h e wa s in a very tight third by lap four. In lap five, Simons went down hard an d dropped back, leaving Haxton a nd in first and fighting for his life with Kiedrowski. Hugh es won bo th motos in th e Vet Master class, but cons istent a nd fast riding in th e Interm ediat e class was th e key to success. Loren Barr ett was th e fa stest 500cc Intermediate rider today, but a crash in th e seco nd moto kept him from th e o vera ll. Barrett eas ily cap tured the w in in the fir st moto, with Hughes taking second . Barrett's second-moto cra sh left him in fourth position, a llowing Dean Brooks (Hon) 10 take th e win, with Hughes in second. Hughes' co n sistent 2-2 performance was good for th e overall. .
