A co m p u ter p rin to u t o f th e cras hes p ro vid ed to Cycl e N ews by th e CPSC showed th at 67 o f th e 324 fat a lities in vol ved co ll isio ns with o the r vehicles, including seven with tra ins, 26 with tru cks, 19 with cars, two with farm eq u ip ment, five with mo torcycles, six w ith oth er ATVs an d o ne with a snowmobi le. R iding o n roads was in vo lved in 11 8 incidents, in clud in g 49 fata l crashes o n paved roa ds a nd 69 on unpa ved roads; in a noth er 89 cas es th e acc ide n t terra in is ind ica ted a s unkno wn in the C PSC sta tistics. Collisions w ith wires, cha in s, barriers a nd fen ces were involved in 13 ca ses; o ne case inv o lved a n ATV rid den off a roa d when th e rid er encou n tered a was he d-o u t br idge. Drowning wa s in vo lved in I I incid ents; fall in g th ro ugh thin ice and drown ing cla im ed three of those II lives. A fall into a n o pen m ining pit took anoth er. In o ne case, a person pushing an ATV a lo ng a p aved ro ad wa s hit by a L.H, an d th e case was incl uded in th e numbers ba ndied abo ut by Statler. T h ree-wheelers wer e invo lved in 248 of th e in cide nts , w ith 54 listed as un kn own a nd 21 listed a s invo lvin g four-wh eeled ATVs. T h e sta tistics listed 41 of th e fat a liti es a s passe ngers o n AT Vs, 55 as unkn o wn , a nd th e rest as " drivers" (ride rs) . Co llision s wi th trees were inv ol ved in 33 cra shes. Th e stati s tics did n ot indi ca te wheth er o r n ot th e perso ns inv o lved were wearing h elmets o r o the r p ro tective eq u ip me n t.
