I would lik e to tak e this oppo r tu n rr y to ex p ress m y feeling s a bo u t th e AMA's ha ndl in g o f Formul a O ne motorcycle ra ci ng. I joined the AMA last year beca use I wanted to do m y part to further th e sport o f m o torcycl e raci ng in th e Uni ted Sta tes . My interests center main ly on road raci ng si nce I ride a 1982 H onda C B900 F. I figured then that m y members hip fee would go to further a ~ 1 types o f motorcycle ra cing. Now I fmd th a.t th e A MA is pretty much a ba ndoni ng th e F-I class in 1?86 to force m ore interest in Su perbik es, I have h eard exc uses lik e: " It's ~~ch chea per t.o race Su perbikes ," Since people rid e street bikes, they would rather see stree t bikes ra ce," and more. I rid e a sport stree t bike and I want to see th e top of the line fast est m achiner y race. I spen d $25 ~ year su bsc ribing to Cycle N ews so I ca n find o u t who won the 500cc Grand Prix the week before ($2.08 per G ra nd P rix ). As yo u ca n see, Form u la ~ ne compe ti tion is motorcycle raem g to me . . Also a ~o n g th ese lines , m y initial mterest III motorcycl e racin g was spa rked by watching Dal e Si ng leto n Will th e 1982 Da yt ona F·I race. For th e past three yea rs, I ha ve been overj oye d a t see ing Daytona o n TV a nd I ~ave been looking forward to spend mg m y vacat ion in Davt ona during Speed Week . No w th ai I learn th at Bill France has d ro p ped F-l co m petiti on, I've lost th e urg e to attend Speed Week (too m an y pukes a nyway!). Looks like it's Lagu na Seca for m e. It is for the above rea sons th at I will not rene~ m y membership in th e AMA until th e AM A starts acting li ke a real raci ng o rganiza tion a nd supports a nd fun d s all forms of rnotorcyc1e racing. A few days after readi ng R ich Drol ens letter in Vo ices, (Cycle News, O ctober 23 ), I received a n adve rt ise.rnen t for th e World Su percro ss Final s o n Nov ember 9 at th e L.A. Coliseu m . In th is ad. th ey brag ged that th e tra ck will be " j us t like th e Ma y II th tra ck th at a ll rider s co m p la ined abou t." Th is is the same kind o f irresponsible a tt itude th at Mr. Drol en was warn in g agains t. The promo ters must think it 's funn y that a ll th e rider s felt th e tra ck was unsaf e. Such a blatant di sr egard for riders' co ncerns is just askin g for lawsuits or rider bo ycotts. In light of th e promoter 's ad , I wouldn 't blame r ide rs for ei ther o f the above ac tio ns.
