Becky Schneid er , las t year 's 80cc class cha m pion , came o u t this fall rid ing a 500cc Yamaha in the FourStroke Open class. In the dry first rnoto, she pulled the holeshot over Dan Dickinson (Yam) and Jeff Konell . Dickin son got right next to Schneider severa l times. bu t she was able to hold the lead. At th e checkered it wa s Sch nei der. Dickinson and Konell. The seco nd moto started th e same as the first. Dickin son was alm ost up to Sch neider wh en he fell off in a foo t o f mud and had difficulty getti ng up a n d res ta rti n g . Kon ell follo wed Sch neider for Severa l laps before Dickinso n rej oined the racing action in th ird. The order stayed the same 10 th e fin ish. WA, ocr. 27 Yamaha-mou n ted Jeff Miles had to ride hard today to take the overall win in the 250cc class at the scrambles he ld at the --36 Woodland Motocross Park. In the first 250ccmoto. Bud Ashcraft (H on) took th e lead, followed by Dea n Autrey. Todd Geary (H us), Jeff Mil es and Da n Holum (H on) . Mi les wasted no time in passin g G eary for third, th en on th e next lap, got by Autrey and set out af ter Ashcraft. Miles drove ha rd on the ou tsid e of th e sweeper to pass Ashcraft in the air go ing over th e jump. O n the last lap, Autrey went by Ash craft, th en Geary also mad e a smooth pass on h im. At the finish . it was Miles. Autrey, Gea ry a nd Ash craft . In rnoto two , it was raining hard as Ash craft pulled another hol eshot 10 lead Mi les a nd Gea ry. The m ud was taking its toll a s th e rest o f th e pa ck never showed up. Mil es tried to dive under Ashcraft, but Ash craft shut th e door on him. so h e backed off a little a nd got up a lo ngs ide Ash craft in th e deep mud. Miles held on over the jump 10 squeeze by to take th e lead over Ashcraft and Geary. The order rem ained the same to the flag. The final moto was very muddy as Miles. Au trey and Geary went start to finish in that order. The 80cc class had a good turnout with 60cc Grand National Flat Track Champion Ryan Anderson coming out on a Kawasaki KX80-spo nsor ed by Beavert on Honda and Country Yamaha- Kawasaki. The track was still in excellent shape for moto one as Anderson got the hol eshot, followed by Troy Hu tson (Yam), Doug StockIleth, Rick Smith (Hon ) and J en nyfer Busch ow (Ka w). Smith a nd Stockfleth traded positions many times before Smith was able 10 mak e a pa ss that stuc k. Up front . Hutson chased Anderson lap aft er lap right on hi s rear fender. Joh n Sa ndona popped from th e ga te first in event o ne, but two time National Champion " King Kell y" Moran pa ssed h im in th e first bend. Sa ndona sta yed close. but had 10 settie for seco nd. Onl y two riders fin ished th e first ride as R ich Swea ney fell a nd cro wd favorite " Showt ime" Bobby Ott dropped o u t with mot or problems. The 1985 Nationa l Champi on, Alan Christian, easi ly took event two th en Errno len ko won a wild fir stla p battle with Mik e Far ia 10 tak e even t three. Faria was filled in by Errn ol enko 's roost and dropped o rr the pace a nd event ua lly finished third behind Ermo len ko a nd T im McCa sland. Mik e Cu roso ended ro u nd o ne with a win over Keith Larsen. Do ug Ni col took event five over a chargi ng Sa ndona while McCa sland look thi rd. Errn o lenko then thrash ed th e field for a no ther win in event six while Faria won h is first race of the even ing wh en he edge d Mike Mazzacane in event seven. Moran battl ed o rr the ad vances o f Shawn McConnell, Tom Burba a nd Larsen on lap one a nd went o n to score the wi n in event eight and in doing so he stayed even with Ermolen ko , Christia n won th e best race of the n ight in event ni ne . Sandona a nd Faria staved hot o n h is tail all the wa y, but' the new National Champ ion wouldn ' t budge. Sa ndona had seco n d in th e bag until he slowed wh en hi s muffler came loose on the last bend. That a llowed Faria by and normally wou ld have seen Sandona di squalified , bu t he was a wa rded the one point for th ird. McCasland ca me back after his fire in event I I a nd scored a hard-fo ugh t and popular win when he edged McConnel l. T he show-down between Ermolenko a nd Mo ran was in event 12. Errnolen ko got the gate fro m position three whi le Moran missed the start and was mired a t the back of the pa ck. That a llowed Ermolenko to open u p a huge lead whi le Moran had to ba tt le by Andy Northrup. After Northrup, Mora n took on Nicol for second bu t he ran ou t of time a nd finished a length back in third. At th at time, barring a fall or rnechanica l failure. th e title wa s headed for Erm ol enko 's mantel pi ece. Sa n do na a n d Faria o pe ne d th e fourth ro u nd wi th wins a nd that set the stage for a no ther Errnolenk o sho w. He d id it agai n a nd seemed 10 ha ve a wide edge in hor sepow er over the remai nder of the field . Chris tia n kept his cha nces o f a second a live with a win in event 16. Moran was in second, but was for ced to drop bac k a nd eventua lly p u ll o u t of the even t after sufferi ng motor problems as well as getting filled in wi th d irt. For Errn o len ko 10 p u t the cap on h is maxim um, he need (0 win eveIII 17 over Sandona . That wo uld be no ea sy task as Sandona was a lso £lying o n th e chi lly n igh t. Ermo len ko was O U I of gale four wh ile Sa ndo na was orr th e po le. bUI it was McConnell (o u t of two ) who got th e ga te. H is lea d was short-Jived. however , as Errn olen ko breezed by o n th e bac k ch u te. Sandona also gOI by McCon· ne ll at the en d of la p o ne and set o ut a fter En no len ko. It was no doi ng as Ermolen ko wen t on 10 h is fifth win of th e n igh t and th e title. After the final chec kered fla g , he entertained the huge crowd with a series of spectac u la r wh eeli es. Christian too k event 19 a nd Faria pa ssed Curoso a nd th en held him back to win event 20 a nd set up a run-orr for seco nd. T h is run-orr is the same one that wa s am icipa ted between Christian a nd Faria for th e Nati onal Champion ship o ne month befor e. Faria drew th e pole a nd th ey were even o ut o f th e ga te, but it was Christian edg ing a head a nd cu tti ng down to the pole as th ey ca me o rr turn two .
