Un known to hi s competitors, Hughes' left hand swelled co n side rably and he kept it in ice until race lim e. A det ermined Hughes overcame th e pain and less-tha n -secu re grip to win both motos. In the firs I, he had a bit of lu ck ; leader Mike Hernandez, sponsored by Yamaha Country, was proving impossible to pass until late in th e m oto when he fell off , giving Hughes th e victory a nd Ri ck Souza runner -up.
