Schwartz claims victory at Carlsbad By Kathy Nemecek CARLSBAD, CA, ocr. 20 Yamah a pilot Ti Schwartz scored two moto wins for the overall in th e 250cc Pro class today at Carlsbad Raceway. During the first rnot o 's actio n o f th e co m bined Pro a nd Intermediate classes, Dave Kropkin lead th e 250cc Pro's o u t of th e ga te but cou ld not h old o ff th e hard -ch arging Schwartz, wh o quickl y roc keted in to first place a nd took a com ma nd in g lead over th e rest of the pa ck . Robbie No lin 's smooth riding netted him second place, while Kropkin rounded out the top three. In th e second moto, Sch wartz repea ted his br illiant pe rformance to tak e th e top honors. Nolin a nd Kro pkin cha n ged positions in th e seco nd moto, resulting in a seco nd place overa ll for Kropkin and a third- pl ace fini sh fo r Nolin. : Some good riding was al so seen in th e 125cc Pro ra n ks by Yamaha mounted Doug Dubach . After a bad start in the first rnot o , Dubach ca me ba ck with a ven geance a nd quick ly moved th ro ug h th e pa ck to cha lle nge Sch wartz for th e overall P ro lead. Dubach , h owever , co uld n ot manage to o verta ke Schwa rtz a nd sett led for a first-place win in th e I25cc di vision. A better start in the seco nd mot o still co u ld n ot ass u re Dubach th e overa ll Pro vict ory as Schwartz managed to hold off the challe n ge for 12 laps. Dubach 's efforts did net him th e I25cc Pro class vict o ry with S uzuki rider Danny Almon fin ish in g in second. Despite stro n g cha lle nges fro m Steve Crevier o n a new five-valve FZ750 Yamaha , G oodfell ow held fellow Canadians Crevi er a nd Ni ck Defago (GSXR750) 10 seco n d a nd third in th e 750cc Prod uction fina l. G o odfellow, who p robabl y h a s more GSXR750 ex perien ce than a n yo ne els e in th e northwest , won th e dampish morn in g qual ifier a head o f two-tim e Canadian Superbike cha mp ion Steve Dick a nd Steve Littlejohn (FZ750). For Nel son, it was a come -fro m-beh in d vict ory as he was o u tri dden in th e first mot o by Danny Boles (Yam ). Bol es o u t-g u n ned the field to the first corner a n d stretched th e lead to abou t 100 yards at o ne time during the rnot o. Running second until abou t midmoto wa s the o n ly o the r Yamaha in th e field , p iloted by Jeff Pestana. But P estana fell off wh en he mist irned th e diffi cult washboard section of the track. Nelson th en took over second pl ace, a bo u t 50 yards beh ind Bol es. Eric Ma shbir (H o n), back in his first race sin ce breaking a shou lder in midseason, gained third pl a ce, racin g hard against Pestana , Ga ry Pennin gton (Ho n) a n d John Dau th (Hon ).
