Hopkins dominates SRACMX By Larry Johnson LAKEWOOD, CO . ocr. 20 Kawasaki pilot Brian H opkins combined a fla wless 1-1 score today to capture the 125cc Am ateur overall a t th e Sports Rid ers Association o f Colo ra do (SR AC) m otocross in Lakewood, Col o rad o , the final event o f th e season. It 's been two weeks since th e fin al points were tabulated, a nd a light turnou t combined th e 125, 250cc and Open Amateurs classes. In the first mota, Hopkins Cinished second to the onl y Open rider, J ames Blissett (H a n) . H opkins once again placed seco nd overall in th e second m ot a , but this time lo st to 250cc rider Kurt Eichacker (Kaw). However , H opkin s took th e I25cc cla ss win each time out to n ail th e overa ll. Wes McClure (Ya m ) put toge the r a 1-3 da y to ca p ture first o vera ll in th e 250cc Amateur class and will mo ve up to the Pro ranks n ext year. AI Strope (Yam) traded m ot a w in s with Kawasaki rider J ohn Wright in th e 80cc Amateurs, and since Strope won the second moto tie-breaker, th e Yamaha pilot went home with th e first-pla ce trophy. Novice riders Sean Ward (Ka w) and Eric Scheel (Ka w) al so pi cked up first-place trophies after cla im ing th e overall in th e 125 a nd 250cc classes. Ward trailed Shane Anderson (Kaw) for half th e race in th e first 125cc rnoro before taking over the lead and going on to take the win. In the second mota, Ward had it a littl e ea sier , leading fro m start to fin ish . In the 250cc class, th e firs t mota sa w Scheel easily lead from start to fin ish . A fift h-place start had Schee l figh ting h is way th ro ugh traffic in the second moto before taki ng the win and overa ll. The course, as usua l, h ad sections of lak e bottom with much more tight woods added this year. Last year's 250cc sen sation, Jim Servo, had hi s problems today, a s self-spon so red Dean . Autrey (H a n) , ca me out on top of th e hot ly contested 250cc class. After winnin~ a wild first mota, a Woodland fir st timer, Gary Jackson (H a n) went on to finish second overall. Jim Anderson £lew to three firsts in a rare appea rance a t the Woodland tra ck , giv ing Cans th eir money's worth with a fant asti c display of riding skill s. In moto three, starting backwards o n th e penalty line, Anderson quickly made up a 30-yard deficit to pi ck off three rid ers in turn two, one in th e air ov er the jump and another going in to turn three. Staten powered to th e lead ea rly in eac h round as Kawa sak i rid er T ommy Combs kept th e p ress ur e on fro m th e number-two spot.
