H e beat Walt Fa rn um o ff th e line for the lead and was com forta ble a t th e front of the pack wh ile King was charging from th e 50. Kin g took Andy Northrup for thi rd a t th e end of th e th ird circui t. H e th en shot by Farnum for seco nd as th ev rocketed down th e back ch uteon lapth ree. Bomer breaks tradition at CRC Whistle Stop Enduro By Bill Herndon BARSTOW, CA , OCT. 13 Wh i Ie a c1everl y-d es i g n ed course laid out by [he California Ra cing Club caught more riders burning checks [han any even t in recent memo ry, O pen B rider Mike Bomer hurried h is Husk y in for th e over all win a t th e Whistle Stop Enduro. In doing so, Bomer not o n ly logged the only "zero" o f th e da y, a t 0.59 seco n ds drop ped, but won a n ins ta n t ride to the A class for h is effort. T he Checkpoin ts' Grant Pal en ske, wh ose American H onda-sponsored CR250 su ffered coola nt leaka ge, reco vered to win th e 250cc AA cla ss, and second overal l. While man y other riders, including top riders , burned one or more checks to th e point of disqualification , Pal cn ske rode a con. ser vative race to a 1.63. H e was th e first o f o n ly six "ones ." The second su rp rise of the day was pre- Jfi-year-old Rob Peters, who gunned his KDX200 into third overall, fir st 200A, at I. 76. While 1986 heir-apparent to th e 200cc class Donnie Simone knocked himself o u t o f the Whistl e Stop top 20 by burning the first Special Test checkout, T on y Casaga pick ed up th e pieces for fourth, at 1.91. Due to clapped-out forks on his IT200, Casaga was a near non-starter , but grimly held on fo r both loops. Brian Olsen (H us) , running 250AA. sn agged fifth, a t 1.95 dropped . foll owed by Dean McCo y' s 1.131. Ev ergreen Harry " Beas t" Keast sm o ked the 250AA Senior class, taking hi s Performance Cycl e-sponsored Can-Am to 1.143. Next in , Troy Ra yn or had a lot more peop le scra tch ing th eir heads wh en h e took his Open Four-st roke H onda to a pe rfect seco nd- loop sco re. Both of h is m inutes in hi s 2.76 sco re were dropped on th e fir st loop! Des pi te burnin g c hec k seve n , Granad a Yamaha 's Randy Pretzer turned in a n o utsta nd ing 2. 101 sco re, for first 250A, a nd ninth o vera ll. Conversely, j im Bollingmo was two minu tes late a t check seven, co mi ng up wi th 11th o vera ll a t 2. 117. Loop H ol d ri dge gave up a ll exc uses 10 be in th e 200B cla ss on his new KDX 200. T oday's class win a nd 2.151 sco re won him A class recogn iti on h ereafter. Greg Turk took top 200A Sen io r a t 2. 163, a nd 19th o vera ll, while new co rner- Myron Thorsen brought hi s n ow -obsolete 1985 XR350 H onda hom e fo r a tie. and fir st Open B Fourstro ke. Loop o ne h eaded eas t through th e ro lle rs, a nd turned ri ght parallelling T ownsend Wash at mile o ne. Three m iles o u t, ne a r th e town o f Lenwood, the course veered eas t th rough rolling hills near Barstow. a nd th e checkin to th e da y's fir st Speci al T est at 6.2 m iles. Through as varied terrain as Barstow ca n offer, th e 24-mph test took rid ers p ast two FAA lowers to the checko u t a t 10.2 miles located o n a long downh ill. CRC's revol ving for ma t fo u nd no rese ts th e entire da v, but in stead used free time . . Aft er a five-minute Fr ee, th e 18m ph average took riders o n ly 3.9 m iles before th e n ext well-hidden check - an d th e beginning o f th e seco n d Spe ci al T est. Runnin g th ro u g h som e rocks a n d lot s o f whoops, chec k-o ut ca me a t 17.4 miles. The first loop's last Free, this o ne 10 minutes , came 4.5 miles later near th e Slash-X Cafe. Ribbon-cha sers then headed so u th at high speed down th e HDRA dune buggy course, crossing Hoover Dam's Powerline Road , th en veered wes t toward Stoddard Va lley's low hills at 21 mph. jumping north towards Watkins Peak, speed changed to 30 mph , and loop one's third Special T est ch eck-in came a t 33.4 miles. After testing sand course skills, checko u t ca me at 34.9 miles , followed by a n en ding l2-mph speed "01135.9 miles. The crea tivity of loop o ne wa s a p pare ntly just too much for tradi tional " sa m e o ld thing " end uro rid ers. It was h ilarious for check six pe rso n ne l to wa tch rid ers trials-ri di ng into the 38.3-m ile fin ish , wh en instructio ns clearly sta ted it was both a kn own ch eck (this event ) a nd yo u co u ld a rr ive up to 15 minutes ea rly. A record so far this yea r, loop o ne co n ta i ned three Specials , si x checks, and three tiebreakers. Keeping th e stri ng of surprises unbroken , th e ATVs came o n stron g, with j eff Courts ta ki ng h is Honda to loop o ne overa ll h onors a t 3. 116 d ropped. Udo Webb also rode to seco nd a t 3. 134. First motorcycle was Eric Cooks, who put his Suzuki in third, at 3.171. Fourth-place Craig Flanders won th e 125C-16 class with a 4.62 on his Honda. While th e old man went off to win hi s class, summer brid e Bell y ( Le n n o x) Holdridge gunned her KDX to the B Women win, despite a burnt check which cost her the overall. to 4.100 , and fifth pl ace. . Aft er a 31-minute break, loop two riders found so me th ing else new. rh e sta rt right up the face of Candy Ass Hill. After 2.2 m il es at 12 mph , riders . hit a 36-mph Special tha t featured tight, rocky , narrow trai l, and gnarly, gnarly terrain. And no check-i n . Check seven , a lso the checko u t, found more than Pretzer burning it, as severa l decided to risk it and go in early. A IO-minute Free found refreshed competitors punched intoan 18-mph slow-down zon e, which was not as rocky, but tight a nd whooped-out. Spe ed then bum ped to 2 1-m p h to th e Powerline Road an d up a long gnarly, rock-lined uphill. C riders may have wish ed for a n easy / ha rd way, but th ere wa s n o check for a long way. The next Special T est, a t 23.0 miles, was a rea l teaser: 30-m ph , but makea ble by th e to p riders . Many of those, in cluding Tom Cole a nd Chris Reyes, th o ught th ey were late - a nd burned th e 26.0 mile checko u t. A five-minute Free follo wed . T he cou rse the n headed o ut across o pe n desert "011a slow 18-mph for 3.6 mil es. T oo slo w, accordin g to most ri de rs. But bl ood did sta rt to circ u late at Wild Wash Road, wh er e th e 30.2 mil e spe ed-c ha nge went to 36-m p h a n d th e sixth Specia l o f th e da y. Parall eling 1-15. th ere wa s n o checkin (no place to hide it ), a nd a tiebr eak er check-o ut (no need to hide it ) a t33 .8 mil es. Th e last treat o f th e da y ca me foll owing th e five-minute Fre e: A 12-mph sec tio n to th e 40.2 mile fini sh. It ende d up being a tri ck 10 more than 50 riders, wh o not o n Iv burned th e h ome check, but co rnp le te ly d isqual ifi ed themselv es by being m ore than 15 min u tes ea rly! This, despite exp lici t riding in structions sta ting no field checks aft er 36.6 m il es with a no the r tea ser : " Enjo y!" OCT. 6 Ken Evans, on th e Canepasponsored Ex-Dave Troetschler 450 Ducati, pulled off an impressive win during the 10th rou nd o f th e Ca li fo rnia Vintage Ra ein gGroup's (CVRG) Cha m p io ns h ip Vintage Series at Sears Point. Ra in th reaten ed th e race Saturda y night, bu t th e sun appeared o n Sunday , giv ing th e riders a d ry tra ck to race o n . T he event was th e last northern California Vinta ge race for 1985, and most riders hoped to gain muchn eeded points fo r th e cham p io nsh ip. When th e green ca me o u t, Evan s ca me from th e back row to lead th e pack into turn o ne, but drop ped back by turn th ree wh il e missi ng a number o f sh ifts. Once Evans so rted o ut the rig h t-ha nd sh ifter, h e p u lled int o the lead for good . Not fa r behind was a four-pack co ns isting of Fred Mork (250 Aermacchi /MorkRacing), Mike Canepa (250 Du cati ), Mik e Green (250 Ducati/Hap j ones/West Coast British ) and Craig McLean (350 Manx Norton /M cLean R a cing), in that order. Th e group fr eight-trained a ro u nd the 2.5 m il e circ u it, none being able to pass eac h o ther.
