Scott Steffy (Marushin l Moto Craft) made two ex cellent sta rts and cha lle nged for the fro nt position in bo th motos, but threw a cha in in moto one , a nd in the seco nd round, l o s t his ba lance a nd cras hed to the grou nd w hen attempting to pass over a double j u mp. Hi cks dominat ed th e 250cc Pro cla ss, but had so me trouble in th e l25cc P roc1a ss a nd had to settle for second beh ind Suzukisu pported Bobby Moore. In th e first moto o f th e co m bined 250cc a nd 500cc Pro even t, Hi cks a nd h is Yamah a shot o ff th e line to a n immedi at e lead a nd streaked right to th e fini sh in first. By midpoint of th e l2-lap race, H icks had a 16-second lead over seco nd pl a ce. Hondamounted Eri c Marn och followed H icks across th e lin e 10 take a first in th e 500cc class. Mot a two was a ca rbon copy of th e first , as Hi cks strea ked out o f th e sta rt ing ga te and never looked back unt il he passed th e chec kered fla g . Hi cks a lso entered the 125cc event a nd it looked lik e h e might repeat hi s dominat ion in th at class a lso. Moore got th e jump in rnoto one a nd h eld th e lead for most o f th e race. H e wa s cha sed for th e entire moto by Mik e Kiedrowski, on a Kawasaki for T eam Green. By th e beginning of the last lap, Hicks had worked his wa y up to third and the sig h t of th e white flag rea lly lit hi s fire . On th e sta rt of the last lap, Hicks was rig ht on Kied ro wsk i' s rear fender , and h e tried an assortment o f spectacular moves but co u ld no t brea k through Kied ro wski's def en ses.
