Arnet held o n to take the win . followed b y Kal as, Bret Shuney, Drey Dirks (H a n) a nd T im Ru th erf ord. Consolations Onl y th e top three in th e consol a tions transferred into th e fin al , and a t th e start o f th e fir st 250cc co ns o la tio n race, it was Brett Cahors o u t in front. Arnet was second, foll owed by Sills a nd Greg Flanagan . During the third lap , Ca h ors got o u t of sha pe in th e whoops, which gave Arnet the lead. Shortl y thereafter , Manlev motored into second but co u ld n' t ga in a n y ground on Arnet. Arnet and Manley finished fir st and second. On ly five riders made up th e 500cc co n so la tio n race, and it was Kawasaki rider Frankie Brundage with the ho lesh ot , He qu ickl y ex tend ed his lead and led for five laps befo re cra sh ing over a double jump, which knocked him o u t of contention for th e night . Pete Murray (M-S) inherit ed th e lead with a large distance o ver Chris Sh aw (Ya m) and Dan Berg (Ya m) . Berg closed in on Shaw a s th e race progressed a n d event ua lly snuck into second. Murra y took the win about five seco nds a head o f Berg. The 125cc consolation race was a start-to-finish romp by Kawasaki rider Doug O 'Donnell. His nearest competition throughout th e mota was another Kawasaki rider , Mike Kied rowski . But Kiedrowski cou ld n' t match O 'Do n nell 's pace a nd had to settle for second at rnoto's end . Finals Local hero Turner shot his Cagiva into the lea d at the start of th e 250cc fina l just a head of Frank, Holley, R u ss Wageman and Ward. The top th ree riders stayed withi n inches of each o ther d uring the first th ree la ps , th en Fra n k made his m o ve and dove inside o f Turner th rough a turn . H oll ey fo llowed ' Frank's line and sai led past Turner a t the sa m e time. A la p la ter , Wageman dropped Turner ba ck one more position. By the fifth lap, the top five riders were Frank, Holley, Wa geman, Turner and Somma. From th is point on , a ll eyes were focused on the Frank/Holley duel. H olley tried stuffing his Yamaha under n eath Frank in every turn but co u ld n' t make th e pass . Th is went o n for eig h t laps before Holley finall y found the ri ght line through the w hoops a nd cha rged into th e lead. Once o u t in front , Holley sl owl y stretched h is advantage o ver Frank whil e weaving through lapped traffi c. By th e end o f th e race, H olley a nd Frank had motored a wa v from th e th ird -place rider Wageman, w ho held a co m m a ndi ng di stance ov er Turner. They event ua lly fin ished in this order. Simons blew out of the gate a n d into th e lead at th e start o f th e 500cc final , while Dymond locked handl ebars with a rid er a few feet off the line and lost va lua ble time. At th e end o f the fir st lap, Simons sti ll h eld on to a slim lead over Ell is a nd Zitterkopf. A lap later , Zitterkopf started his attack by stu ffin g his way by Ellis, th en swa p ped into the lead by passing Simons through the whoops. Once into the lead , Zitterkop f started pulling away qu ickly, while Dymond, who worked up to fourth a n d was sett ing up Ellis for a p ass, g ot out o f sh ape over a doub le jump and tangled with th e co u rse-m a rke r banners in the following turn . Dymond lo st a full lap pulling th e banners o ut of hi s bike. Meanwhile, Zitterkopt enj oyed h is ever- i nc reasin g lead, but Larson was o n th e gas and had ta ken co nt rol o f seco nd o n th e fifth lap. Larson slow ly chewed a way a t Zitterkopf's lead but time was running o u t. On th e final la p , Larson was inch es behind Zitter kopf, but La rson 's la st a ttem p t at the lead wa s hampered when Greg Torgerson crashed ov er th e finish-lin e jump, causing yellow flags . Larson had to hold back slig h tly, which was enough for Zitterkopf to claim the win . Simons finished third ah ead of Manley and Ellis. The most exciting ra ce of the night was also th e la st. Vowell jammed into th e lea d at the start of the 125cc fin a l, whi le W hitlev , Kal os, Hi cks, Ar net and Jeff Ma'tiasevich (Ka w) closely pursued. Whitley moved into second a few turns lat er, but Kalos pa ssed both Vow ell a nd Whitley by la p three. Soon after , Kal os quickly sta rted pulling away, w hile Hick s moved into third and sta rted p ress u rin g Whitl ey for seco nd. Just past th e halfwa y mark , Whitley crashed and dropped out o f the ra ce, giving second to H ick s and third 10 Naugh ton , who had almost unno ti ceably wo rked his (A bo ve) Holley sails to the 250cc win. (Below ) Eddie Hicks smoked everyone in the first 125cc semi. He took third in the final . wa y up through the pack a l ter a poor s ta r t. Two laps later, Naughton nipped Hicks th roug h the whoops for secon d, and with Kal os way ou t in front, it lo oked as though th a t wou ld be as far as Naughton co u ld go. But wi th five laps remaining, Kal os slid o u t ex iting a turn, and by the time he had recovered, N aughton h ad already m ot ored by. Ka los salvaged second in ch es behind Naughton a nd inches a head o f Hicks, who wa s hounded by Arnet a nd Moore. On the fi na l lap, N augh ton , Ka los, Hi ck s, Arn et a nd Moore were within in ch es o f eac h other but nobody co u ld m ake a pass .
