The track itself is exceptionally rough, . es pecially arou n d th e high banking. T eam H ammer, last yea r's ch am pions, ende d a frustrating day w ith a sn apped steer ing damper a nd suspe ns io n failu re a fter five hours. Bu t for local rid er s m ore used to the co n di tio ns , it was a good da y, w ith five T exa s teams a nd two Arkansas teams fini shing in th e top 10. Kenny Payto n and S teele Kennedy led th e local assault, placing seco nd overa ll on their 600 Ninja. Kocinski b la sted into the lead a t th e sta rt, pulling severa l hundred ya rds on Vernon Davis of Team Devia te at th e fi nish of th e first lap. Surprisingly, whe n th e pai r re turned from the second lap, Da vis held a similar margin over Kocinski . After th e th ird lap, though, Kocinski set up a pace that was to hard to fo llow, so me times turning I :56 laps. Team H ammer missed most of practi ce repairing cra sh damage; wi th Doug Toland at th e helm , Hammer began p icking up places a fter fin ishing th e first lap around 10th. By th e en d o f th e first hour, four teams were still o n the sa me lap, with Cycle T ech h olding o u t on T eam Deviat e. They covered 173 laps around the deteriora tin g 3.25-mile course with a one lap margin of victory over Team Miss Camel Pro, Vivian Chadbourne, j o ins ' S4 champ Ricky Graham, new champ Subba Shobert, and master of ceremon ies Dave Despain on stage. o ....
