CA, SEPT. 8 Under unseasonably cool and pl easan t riding co n d i rions, John Ferro won th e Ca lifornia Racing Club's Gull ywhomper Enduro. Fer ro mana ged to turn in th e on ly zero o f th e day on hi s Honda CR500, a t .96 for firs t o vera ll, a nd fir st O pen AA. Fast rising Donn ie "Sponsors" Sim on e made a big mis ta ke and d ro ppe d h is o n ly minute in the loop, b ut sti ll ma naged to ta ke h is nearly fin less KDX 200 to a zero second loop to redeem second o vera ll, a t 1.86. Skip Cristy brought th e so u nd of va lves into first Open A Four-Strok e, and fourth overa ll o n hi s KTM ,. a t 1.93. Rick Da n iel, who wa s a lleged to have had a zero score late in th e event a t Lowell " Spoo f" Spiva 's chec k, had to settle for fifth overa ll, third AA at 1.98on h is Husky. Several riders wh o used com p u ters th at don't use rollch arts and d idn ' t catch the rou te sheet error o f break time between loo ps, found themselves out of luck . The first of th ese was Jim Boll in gmo Jr., but he st ill managed to clim b back up to sixth o vera ll, first AA/Vet at 1.138. Pe te Postel delivered the mail on hi s Ho nda XR2 50, taking seventh overall and first 250cc AA Four-Stroke a t 2.107. J ack Labrum won th e 250cc A/Vet a t 2.117, a nd eig h th overall. Wif e Kath y had a good ride go ing until she got a com mon IT 200 mal ad y: flat rear tire (tiny rear ti res co me stock). J ack Sim merman too k n inth ove rall , followed by Ku rt Bu tler. Loop o ne eased off at 18 mph for three mi les o n th e southerns ide of th e Rand Mo unta in s. At 5.6 m iles, as su m me r layo ff rid ers got the saddle feeling agai n, speeds kicked u p to 2 1 mph up to Rand Mountain Ri dge, dropped back to 18 mph for 1.6 m iles. and th e first o f nine chec ks ca me a t 9.5 miles, for th e beg inn in g o f th e first of th e d ay's th ree Special T ests. The first mile stayed a t 18 mph through rough sla te o u tcro p p ing s near Sydney Peak , th en jumped 10 36 mph through ca n yons and rolling h ill s for an unusua lly long Speci al. Checkout ca me at 14.9 a nd a free time (no t a reset) of 10minutes. Recharged riders tu rn ed north toward Kohn Dry La ke at 18 ' m p h for 6 mi les, th en south through a la rge and wid e sandwash nort h of Park C. An especia lly well -placed checkpo int at the top of a hill at 24.4 ended severa l rid ers' hopes of good scores by burning th em .
