Both fa vorites wo n th eir respe cti ve hea t races, so the fin a l a ppeared to be set as the showdown. Freitas snared the holeshot, but a t th e end of the fir st la p it was Don Myers in the lea d , follo wed by Freitas a nd Athe rton. Lap th ree saw Atherton take co ntrol while Freitas was still hav in g problems with Myers . By th e h a lfwa y m a rk . Atherto n still led and Bryan Mcfrowel l h ad joined th e fray to ba tt le for seco nd p lace . On la p 10 of th e 12·lap race , Atherton a n d Fr eit a s h ad shown their super iori ty and pulled clear from th e o thers . National After much deliberation the fin al National of 1985 go t under way with tempers fla ri ng. Parker was one of th e few who wanted to go wi th the safer ro ute of two separa te races. bu t wh en the fla g dropped on th e 25-mi le race. Parker led into turn one. Sh a hen and Poovey foll owed Parker while Graham was back in sixth pl ace. At th e en d o f the first la p th e orde r read: Shobert, Park er, Poo vey, Ra iney a nd j orgy . Shobert seemed wil ling to ris k tire wear and go for the big early lead, a nd th at 's exactly what he d id. By the fifth la p , Shobert look ed to be in comma nd whi le Parker, Poovey, Ra in ey a n d Fi lice went at it for second. Filice soon dro p ped off the pace after slidi ng off th e groove in turns three a nd fo ur whi le Ra in ey bega n to take ch arge in the group battling for seco nd. Ra iney moved int o second o n lap eig h t as th e pa ck began to reel in Sh obert. Ra in ey put his H ar ley into th e lead for th e firs t tim e o n lap 13 as Sh ob ert began to fade. All five of the leaders were in stri ki ng ra nge wit h Poov ey. Shobert , Park er a nd Jorgy leading the way . Pa rkerm oved to the fro nt of the second-place ra ce. and by the 18th lap, it became a p parent th at it would be a Ra in ey/ Parker duel to th e fin ish as th e two co ns tant ly swa pped positions . Ra in ey wo u ld gai n o ff turn two a nd into turn three, b ut Par ker was right th erea t th e stan/fi nish line and in the lead going in to turn one. j orgen sen began to assert h im self on la p 21and the leadin g trio slammed into turn th ree side-by-side. j orgy mo mentari lv too k the lead on th e 22nd la p gomg' into turn three, but Rain ey and Pa rker soon got by. Wit h two laps to go, H a n k Scott wa s sho wing th e leaders a wheel while adding a new twist to the event . However , when th e foursome emerged from turn four o n the fina l la p , it was Parker pulling o u t of Rainey's d ra ft . to tak e th e w in : j orgy held on to tak e thi rd wit h Scott fourth and Shobert fifth. Parker's win edged h im by Chandler. wh o finished 15th, a nd into thi rd p lace in th e fina l point standi ngs . T h e pr e-race favorite. Graham . h ad pi cked the wrong geari ng for the Na ti o na l and ended up in sixth p lace; Poo vey su ffered a fla t tire o n the last lap a nd sett led for 10th . " I h ad a little doubt even going do wn the fro nt straigh t," Pa rker sai d. '" knew I had Wa yn e beat, bu t I was worried abou t j orgy getting both of us .
