Edge ANCHORAGE, AK, SEPT. 8 J ason Anderson and J oe Good each went one a nd two in Pro and 125cc Expert class action at Kincaid Pa rk . The Alaska Motorcycl e R a ci n g Associatio n (AMRA) held the last round of an eight round series to determine AMRA champions in 15 classes under a con stant ra in . Riders turned up in force , though, for thos e valuable last cha nce points. Mitchell wins at Greeley SX By Larry Johnson G REELEY , CO, AUG. 30 Jim Mitche ll (Hon ) won every mo to in the 125 and 250cc Pro classes tonight at the fourth of five Greeley supercrosses. Mit chell holeshot his l 25cc Pro qualifier and ran o ff to an easy win over Stacey Cook (Ka w), wh o a lso was far ahead of the pack. Mark Flesia (Kaw) led hi s qualifier from sta rt to fini sh over Tim Buchli (Yam) . Mitche ll th en sco red anothe r easy qualifier win in the 250cc Pros a hea d o r Dave Newell (Kaw), wh ile Terry Kyle (Yam) held off Dave Molder (Yam ) in his heat . Wh en the 125cc Pros hit th e first turn o f th e main, Cook was tak en o u t as Flesia grabbed th e lead over Mi tchell . An DeH o ff (Yam ) and Buch li . Flesia and Mitch ell immediatelyesta blished a lead, wh ile DeH off and Buchli were co ntesting th ird severa l bik elengths ah ead of th e pack . For' six laps , Flesia held a safe ma rg in over Mitch ell , but th e DeHoff/Buchl i battle was as close as co u ld be. Then on lap seven , backmarkers held up FIesia and Mit ch ell closed u p and made th e pas s. H e qu ickl y pulled aw a y with o ne lap rema in ing as DeHoff and Buchli a lso got arou nd Flesia, A lapped rider cras hed in front o f th e lead ers, bringing th e top four a ll tog ether for a sp rint to the checkers, but th e or der held a t the finish Mit ch ell , DeHoff. Andy Atkins (Ya m) won th e 80cc Expert class .. In ro u nd o ne , he gave cha se the wh o le way to Rober t Rose (Kaw), but co uld never make a serious challe nge. How ever , h e got his break in moto two . j a red Ramsour (Ka w) took th e early lead a head o f Atkins a nd Rose, but Rose crashed ha rd o n the do u bles a nd was ou t o f contention . This left Ramsour and Atk in s LO do battle, and battle they did . Ton ig h t a t Continental Mo tosport Cl ub's (CMC)-sanctioned mo tocross he added two more wins to give him a to tal of approximately 375. Kawasaki-mounted Tim R ut herford got the holeshot in the first 125cc Pro moro with Turner, Tommy Combs (Kaw) and j erry Jirkovs ky (H o n) in line behind him. On the first lap, Turner charged by Rutherford over the ta ble jumps and for two laps R u th erford 's Kawasaki stayed wh eel-to-wheel with the Cagiva. By the fourth la p, Turner began to pull aw ay slowly, and by the time they crossed the finish line, Turner had put about 20 bikelengths on the second-place Ruth erford. Combs fin ished third a nd jirkovsky was fourth . Rutherford got th e holeshot again in th e seco nd moto with Turner a gg ressivel y pushing him for two la ps. T urner made his move at th e end of the second lap and sl ipped inside Ru therfor d on the big left sweeper before the finish line. Ru th erford fought back for a lap, bu t lost him moment um a nd let Turner gain a li ttle grou nd on the last two la ps. Turner cruised to another overall victory . Rutherfo rd took a seco nd and Combs fin ished third overa ll. Ed Gauley Jr. (C-A), was the first 500cc Pro out of the gate in the first rnoto, At the end of the first lap, Gauley a nd Todd Peterson (Hon ) tangled a nd both went down whil e the rest of th e field motored by. Turner took over the lead with Jim R ut herford ( Ka w) and Mike McMillen (H o n) bumping into seco nd a nd third. Turner developed a huge lead by the third lap, and by th e fourth lap. Peterson and Gauley had worked th eir wa y ba ck up through th e pack into second and third place. Turner, eas ily took the win with Peterson, Gauley a nd McMillen a ll com ing across th e lin e bunch ed up together. Peterson cha rged o u t of th e sta rt ing gate a nd hit th e first turn just in front of T u rn er and Gauley a t the sta n o f moto two. Pe te rson a nd T u rner pu lled o ut ahead of Ga uley a nd the res t o f the rid ers, but none o f th e front run ners cha nged posit ions for th e en tire mot o , Peterson took the o vera ll win with a 2-1, while Turner had LO settle for seco nd with hi s 1-2. Gau ley's cons istent rid e in both rno tos gave him thi rd overa ll. T he second divi sion o f SOcc Beginners was dominated by Kawasaki rider Don Springer. In both motos, he was a t least half a lap ahead of the nearest rider. In rno to one, it was Gary Sutherland (Hon ) who was ho lding down th e number-two spot and fighting o rrcha llenger Kurt Rood (Ka w) right down to th e finish line. In th e seco nd rnot o, Springer rod e his o wn . race half a lap in front of Kevin Busell (Kaw), Chris De Ia Cruz (H on ) and Sutherland, who were involved in a mad scramble for second p lace. De la Cruz passed Busell on the fourth lap and won th e rac e for second. Busell got a third and Sutherland was a clos e fourth. Springman seizes season title at Hannegan By Paul N ielsen BELLINGHAM, WA, AUG. 29 Ru eben Springman too k the Mt. Bak er Motorcycle Clu b's hi ghpoint tit le in th e 250cc A class tonigh t at Hannegan Speedway. Springman rode LO a third-place finish in th e decidi ng race, edging ru nner-up Larry Visco by four points. With th e l25cc A season highpoint tit le sewed up, Visco lined up with th e 250cc A class to try for his seco nd title, as he had a 12-point lead on second place Spri ngma n. When the gate fell Visco (Kaw) grabbed the lead with Robbi e Evans (Hon), Springman (Suz) and jorgen sen (H o n) in pursuit. Visco led th e first lap, but was o u t of th e race with a stripped head bolt on lap two. Evans took over fir st wi th Springman trailing in seco nd . Springman had to finish no less than fourth place to win th e season title. Mark Cunningham, wh o was invo lved in a seco nd ' turn p ileu p , was o n the move as was J orgense n , who had slo wed LO avoid the p ile-up. To complica te ma tters, Steve Friese n (Hon ) had worked up to cha llen ge Springman and was only th ree bik elen gth s behind.
