Oliver sho wed h e wa s in go od form in th e Open Superstreet race. H e and local Am at eur c h a m p io n Denn y Dohert y di sa greed bri efly over j ust wh ere the pole position was, but o nce th e fla g dropped , th ere wa s no d ispute. Oliver shot into th e lead on th e brilliant yellow Kosman Kawasaki a nd was never threat en ed. Dohert v, o n hi s Hannan Machine/Motors West Kawasaki , was threat ened bri efly by Ron Weiland o n yet anothe r Kaw asaki, bu t h e went o n for an ea sy second place finish . Weiland was third. Wh en th e green flag dropped o n th e GP race, Dohen y took th e lead , fo llow ed by Ed Woo o n a T Z750. Gray got off 10 a slo w stan from bac k in th e seco nd row but quickly joined th e front-runners and a t th e end o f th e th e first lap. he had moved 10 first place. H e th en ra n off and left Doheny a nd hi s l3-yea r-o ld Kaw asaki in a race- lo ng ba ttle with Woo , on a Yam aha th at was n earl y as o ld. Wo o tried repeatedly to pass, but was unable 10 ho ld a lead for m ore th an a few yards. G ra y wo n by severa l seconds as Doheny held o n 10 seco nd a nd Woo fini sh ed third . T he two veteran machines p roved tha t o ld isn' t necessa rily slow since Woo finished severa l seconds in fron t o f th e fourth pl ace rider. Kurt Sager won th e hol eshot , but when the p ack came aro u nd , th ere were four bik es figh tin g for th e lead . T he fo ur sorted th em selves out into a freight train of Lerer, J ohnso n,J epsen a nd Sager. T he order held fo r half th e race, then J ep sen s uccum bed to Sager 's superior horsepower. At th e same time, J ohn son made his move o n Lerer. J epsen fell o ff th e pace , as Lerer an d J ohnson ra ced wh eel-towhee l. J ohnson gained a few feet o n Lerer eac h lap a nd on th e la st circu i t . when Lerer a ttem p ted 10 pa ss J ohnso n in turn 10, Lerer crashed , spraying din, deb ris and m ot orcycle pans o n th e track and bringing ou t the red flag . Lerer was uninjured, an d sin ce he was in seco nd o n th e last lap co m p leted, he was awarded th e second pl a ce tro phy. J ohn son took th e wi n, Sager was th ird .
