Scot t Head rode his Beta to his ninth win in a row at the Utah rou nd of the NATC Championship, AMA/NATC National Observed Trials Champ-ionship- Series: Round 9 Head sweeps series By Th orn Martin SALT LAKE CITY, UT. SEPT. 2 Beta-mo u n ted Sco tt H ead made it nine in a row for the 1985 season by winning the Wasatch T ria ls Association's Utah round of the NATC Championship . H ead was never p us h ed in this final round of th e series an d finished 21 points ahead of his nearest competitor. Head turned in three o f the .24 L1. four lowest cha m p ionshi p loop scores for th e day with totals of 15. 12 and II . The lowest single loop of the day belonged to Yamaha-mounted second p la ce finis her Stan Ba kgaard . Bak gaard's third loo p score o f nine was an incredible fea t and earned him a one-point edge over th ird spot finis her Don Swee t (Mo n). r ~~.e.fi~ij~I~1}: l[W~ P1 sen set up a great series of sections. The loop cha nged dramaticall y as it cl im bed th e ca nyon . At th e bottom. the terra in wa s a lmos t desert-like. As the loop climbed up San taquin Ca nyon. it became much more a lpi ne wit h pi ne fores ts in cool sha de . T he strea m sections in th e m iddle were about as cl ose to th e Scottish as most o f us will ever co me . with casca ding st rea ms in boulder-strewn creekbeds . It was section 14. known as Pivot Rock . tha t m ight a lso be n icknamed " Tracy's Reven ge." It sta rted with a three-foot vertical step on to a rock abou t five-feet square. A 90" jerk p ivot 10 th e left and a h op off th e u ndercut rock would set yo u up for the off -camber step up onto th e next large bo u lder. T he la n di ng area for th e h op o ff of this roc k a rea was off -cambered onto so h dirt . P ivot Roc k was not clea ned all day and on ly three rid ers, Bakgaard , Sweet and R ya n Young, scored less than three poi nts o n any ride. Kin gsford is last year' s WTA cham p, so it was a thrill fo r a ll th e local mem bers to see h im ride hi s Ca n-A m to suc h a strong Nat ional finish . T he Sen ior Class Championship for 1985 wa s decid ed here in th e fi na l round. This wa s th e best loop , score turned in by any of th e Support cla sses. a n d it allowed Mallow to win a clos ely-contested fight between h imself. Rob in Farmer and Dal e Ma lasek .
