O ver 14 I 12060 a nd 80ee riders were on hand to do ba ttle, with Brae Sutereomingoutahead with the 80cc 12-16 intermedi ate-class overall win . Ka wa saki pilot Robbie Perez led the cont ingen t o f 31 80cc l 2-16-yearold int erm ediat es out of th e ga te, through th e sandy sta rt a rea and into the firs t tu rn . Yama ha- mo u nt ed Su ter a nd Erick Hilton were right o n Perez's rear fen der, a n d th e tr io pushed o ut a head o f th e res t o f th e pa ck . On the seco nd lap, Suter in ch ed a head o f Perez to ta ke over th e lead, and on th e fift h lap , H ilt on charged by Perez to move into seco nd and sta rt h is pursui t of S uter. On th e last lap, Hi lton flew by Su ter, dropped him back to seco nd a n d took th e checkered fla g. Perez held o n to third and Tommy Clowers (Hon) was fourth . T he sta rt of th e second mo to saw Yamaha rider Pa t Weid e get the ho leshot a n d lead for half a la p until he crashed. It was hi s lu cky da y, however , since the race was red-flagged and he got a seco nd cha n ce to make good. In the res ta rt , Brian Gipson (Kaw) got ou t of th e gate first, but Weid e had ta ken th e lead befo re th e en d of th e firs t la p . Gipson a nd Weide traded the lead th ree ti mes in th e five-lap race, whi le Su ter an d H ilton were holding in th ird and fourth. Wh en the checkered flag came ou t, it was Weide who came o ut on top with Gi pson tak in g second. Suter earned the over a ll victory with a 2-3; Hilton was second wit h a 1-4 and Gipson was third with a 6-2. Perez an d Weid e finished fo urt h and fifth . Kaw asaki riders Ala n Pi erce a nd Ward Bassett led th e first division o f l25cc interm ediates off the line. For the first lap , th ey were in close co m- bat, bu t Bassett had th e edge an d th e lead by the end o f the firs t la p. Honda ri der Sco tt Bro wn got a mediocre start, but by the en d o f the second lap, he had passed J im Sp o tts (Kaw) , Pierce, and was nudgin g Bassett 's rear tire. Ba ssett held on for ha lf a lap, but swi ftness a n d cu nning wo n out, a n d Brown rode o ut in front with a comfortable margin for the rem aining three laps. Brown crossed th e finish line with Bassett coming across second, Spotts third and Jimmy Lewis (Kaw ) in fourt h. it was Terry Szucsko (Kaw) who wa s out in front a t the start of moto two, but it was David Foltz (Kaw) who sailed into first after a poor first moto finish. From somewhere back in the field, the red blur of Bro wn 's Honda was seen moving up wit h haste through the pack. By the ti me Brown had maneuvered h imself into second, Foltz had such a lead that he couldn't be caught in the three laps left. Foltz won with no one else close enou gh to be a serious threat. Bro wn took th e overa ll, however, with h is 1-2 tally. Spotts was second with a 3-5, and John Flores was third with a 7-6. Andrew Olivia (Suz) flew out of th e ga te as 34 div ision two 125cc intermedi ates started their first mot o, but it was T y Davi s a nd his Honda wh o pulled o u t in front and sta yed the re for the entire five la ps and won with a 12-second lead. Yamaha-mounted Mike Young followed Davis in th e seco n d slot th e whole race wh ile Merced es G onzales (Kaw), Charlie Sampson (Kaw) an d J eff Re ynolds (H on) were all vying for third.
