Fra n k Sh iroma , a 250cc rid er, was watch ing Roth a nd slo wly closed o n hi m, ta kin g the lea d on la p 10 a n d fi n ishing first overall. As they ca me o u t o f th e desert portion , Terr y Woody was in th e lead fo llowed by J ohn Adams and Mike No rt o n. Frank O losco was the first 250cc rid er and :r im Sassen led th e 125s wit h Dan Dalton right o n h im. Bu ried in the m idd le o f th e pack of 250s was Alex Krause. By th e end of the second lap , Krause had clawed h is wa y to seco nd a nd began relen tlessly reeling in Woody. Krause took the lead in la p five and cruised in fo r the wi n. Wood y fell off th e o ver a ll p ace a bit, but h un g onto first Open a t th e en d . Sassen a n d Dalton scrapped fo r eigh t fu ll la ps n ever more th a n inches apa rt. but o n lap n in e, Dalt on dro pped o ut a nd Sassen took first 125cc. Brad McLe od , on a 250cc H o nda , and Ya ma ha-mou nted O pen rider Ruben Falcon were firs t into turn one when th e P ro s took off. Zahrt faked McLeod to the outside o f a broad ha irpi n an d sq uirt ed neatly through on th e in side to take th e lead. McLeod never fell more th an two bikelen g th s behind Zah rt, but co u ldn ' t reta ke th e lead a nd Zah rt took th e win . Interm edia te Neal had been passed by a n othe r 250cc Intermedi a te, Bob Step henson ea rly in th e race, a n d Step he nso n rode strongly to fin ish third o vera ll , only 10 seco nds behind the two Pro .leadcrs, Neal wo u nd up second Int ermed ia te. Falcon was next across th e lin e a nd h eld h is first Open Pro posi tio n. Dave Miller ra n a wa y with the Vets race.
