In the two-day Southern States Dirt Track
Championship Series, action got underway
on Friday night at Cowtown Speedway in
Kennedale, with the final round at Mike
'Kidd 's Boyd Raceway in Boyd
on Saturday ni ght. Six ty-plus
riders from six sta tes took part
in bo th short track and TT
events a t bo th trac ks. Of 25 (incl ud in g tro ph y dash ) events which were
run during th e seri es, 24 were won bv
loca l riders . Cl ayton Hull domin ated

Hull was unbeat en in a ll four
events in th e 80cc class for a n ove ra ll

flags. Bentley took th e wi n, a nd with
flags flyin g fro m hi s wh eel, Sha w finish ed a dista nt secon d. Kaufman took

was won by j ack Barnett's Honda
rider Kaufman with Surber goin g to
th e lin e in seco nd ah ead of Kirk T yer.
Kaufman led th e main event wire-towire, ge tt ing the hol eshot a head of
Tyer, Su rber a nd Da vid Thompson.

S u r ber took o ver seco n d p lace.

inside in turn one for third pl ace.

The first Open Pro TT hea t took
it s to ll a s professio na l flat tr ack
eq uip ment found a problem gett ing
over th e seco nd j ump. H erndon was
leading wh en , o n the seco nd lap,
Terry Newma n 's bike p itched comingoff th e jump and flipped Newman
to th e ground. Th e race was redflagged . Newman was a ble to walk
from th e track , but unable to ret urn
to th e line for th e restart. Herndon
again got th e lead into turn one, but
was dumped as he ca me off th e sa me
jump on the first lap with rider and
bike getting tangled, resulting in a
broken ankle a nd possible int ern al
injuries. Quick modifications were
made to th e lip of the jump, and with
no scoring having been made , th e
remaining riders from the heat were
added to the second heat. Bentley led
fellow Honda CR500 rider Orr for
the win in th e seco nd heat, with third
place going to Kidd ; Shaw was fourth.
Orr got the holeshot in th e main
event and led wire-to-wire, with Bentley a near second all th e wa y. Kidd
fin ished in third ahead of jolly, Powers an d Shaw. Bentley closed-in on
th e la st lap, but Orr cros sed th e line
wi th a bikelength lead.
Saturday - short t rack
T rey Glasco took th e 50cc short
track heat race win ahead of Philip
Thompson a n d Bill y Kennedy.
Thompson prevailed in the main
event, with secon d place going to
Glasco ahead of Kennedy and johnny
Hayn ie.
Hull won the 80cc sho rt track heat
race as T eague pu t on a good ch ase,
followed at the finish line by Mike
Weed in and Mark Burch. After a fall
in th e heat race, Scott Williams got
th e holesh ot in th e main event ahea d
of Hull, Weedin an d Kay. Hull dr ove
o ff th e outside of turn fou r into th e
lead a t th e en d o f lap one. Weedin
passed Williams on the front stra igh taway th e next time aro u nd and took
over second place for keeps. After
going into th e fir st corner in seventh
place, T eague mov ed in to fourth place
o n lap seven and finis he d just half a
wh eel behind Will iams a t th e final
fla g.
The finish order o f th e 125cc sh ort
track heat race was Hal e, Carroll ,
Weedin a nd Su rber. Meyer got th e
holeshot in th e main ahead of Hale,
Carroll , Weedin a n d Surber. Hale
pa ssed in sid e numberfour on lap two
an d Carroll took over second. Weedin 's motor quit in turn four of th e
fir st lap, and there were no o ther
position ch anges as Hale won with
Carroll second, Su rber third, and
T eag ue fourth.
Polson was leading th e heat wh en
hi s motor konked out, and th en Dar rell Reeves led until hi s quit a nd Don
Folbre took over to win ahea d of
Kaufman , with joe Sancey falling on
th e la st lap. In the seco n d he at ,
McCracken and j olly got too anxious
an d dr ew penalties. McCracken still
won th e heat with Allen Moriarty
secon d an d jolly in third. On the
start o f th e ma in even, McCracken
got th e holeshot ahead o f Polson,
jolly a n d Moriarty. Polson took th e
lead on th e outside in turn fou r ofthe
fir st lap, a n d th e firs t four positions
held to the checkered flag.
The fir st heat saw Polson, Hale
a n d Miller become th e first three
across the line in Open Amateur
ac tion . In the second h eat , McCracken
took a sp ill a nd th e win went to
Reeves ahead of Harris, Kaufman
and Surber. For the main event, Reeves
led Polson, Surber, Miller and Hale
out of the first corner. Hale passed
