Don Vesco crashed his turbo charged Offenhauser-powered streamliner at close to 350 mph in a speed run at the Bonneville Salt Flats on August 23. Vesco suffered a broken bone in his foot. a chipped vertebrae in his neck. a black eye and some bruises w hen his car lost air in the right rear tire, made a sharp left tu rn. and fli p ped when he tried to co rrect its path . Mik« Quaschnick, a 250cc Novice fro m Fresn o , Ca lifornia. was the big wi n ner in th e H uron H awa ii Mot o- Three-time World Champion Kenny Roberts recently tested the Cagiva ' V-four at Misano, It aly; Roberts did close to 100 laps on the Italian bike during the test session wh ile consistently turning times in the low 1minute. 21-second range , Dale Singleton, three others killed in S.C. plane crash Two-time Daytona 200 winner Dale Singleton, 30. died Sunday evening, September 1. in a plane crash near Winnsboro, South Carolina. that killed three other people . Singleton. who was piloting the plane, and his passengers were en route from the Southern 500 stock ca r race in Darlington. South Carolina. to Chattanooga, Tennessee. Singleton lived in nearby Dalton. Georgia. According to Fairfield County coroner Joe Silvia, the crash occurred at 5:35 p.m, and Silvia speculated that thunderstorms in the area were the cause of the crash. Federal Aviation Administration offi c ials said that the plane was flying at approximately 10,000 feet when it disappeared from their radar. Eyewitnesses told Silvia that they heard the engine sputter and when they lo oked u p they saw the plane coming down nose first. Richie Panch. 30. who was also killed in the crash , was at Darlingt o n t o hopefully close a deal on a NASCAR Grand National stock car ri de for 1986. Panch. who has been working as a coord inator for live t elecast s f or the f irm wh ich produces the weekly TV show MotorW eek Illustrated . competed on the Grand National circuit in t he late '70 s. Th e two other vi cti m s were ident ified as Barbara Fai rbanks, 25, of Hixson. Ten nessee. and Rosemary Pard us, 20. of Marietta, Georgia. Sing leton first raced motorcycles professionally in 1974 when he competed as a Novice in road race events. Sponsored throughout his professional career by Taylor White, owner of a Maryland-based construction company, Singleton's proudest accomplishments were his 1979 and 1981 wins in the Daytona 200. He retired from motorcycle racing in the m iddle of the 1982 season to pursue a ca reer in stock car racing. He made his stock car racing debut in this year's ARCA 200 at Daytona and followed that up wtih a ride in a similar event in Atlanta. He was at Darlington seeking to obtain a ride forthe 1986 racing season. Singleton is survived by his parents. Mr. and Mrs. C .E. Singleton. and brothers Spencer and Perry. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, September 4, at the Love Funeral Home chapel in Da lton, Georgia. . cross Series held a t Huron Cycle Park in Huron , Ca liforn ia. American Rich Oliver was scheduled to enter the race on a Eurosport-backed Yamaha. but the deal fell through days before Oliver was to leave for Belgium.
