Smith doubles at Baylands By Mike Vancil FREMONT, CA, AUG. 7 Gary Smith hauled hi s KXI25 Kawasaki and 500cc GP Honda to Baylands from Yuba City and walked off with four perfect 42 rid es for to p money in both divisi ons. His first o u ting a t Baylands in many weeks saw h im 'easily cap ture th e I 25cc class agains t two o the r KX rid er s: Dann y Paladino a nd Zach ary Fust. Smith was a ble to ca tap u lt into th e lead in eac h mot a and never had 10 look back. His rides were fla wless a nd very qu ick ci rcui ts of th e new Ba ylands trac k were achieved even th ough he was un d er no p ressu re. Th e en d result in th e 500cc class was th e same, but Smi th go t consi dera ble pressu re from Craig Chris tia n (Yam ) a nd Devon J oo s (Han) in th e.process. . In moto o ne Christ ian p ushed h is YZ into the first corn er abreast o f Smith an d only surrendered a little g ro u nd to h im for th e rest o f the mot a. J oos , sponsored by O ' Neal USA a nd Team US, was a ble to hol d o ff repea ted pa ssing attempts from G reg Raub (Yam) . In th eir seco nd mota a brief lead was enjoyed by j oos, but before lap one was over Sm ith ha d th e lead aga in . Raub came home third. An excelle nt turnou t o f racers and a fine set of mo tos were th e resu lt in the 250cc Novi ce class. The high in cidence of cras hi ng has disap peared a nd is but a n early seaso n memory. In th e first moto Steve Pr idd y (Ha n) and Rick Alves (Yam) blasted into the first corner. Th ey di ced for a lap prior to Alves having a slig h t p roblem which ca used him 10 lose a few positions. Movin g in to tak e over and try to ca tch Priddy was Don Tofft (Kaw) and Paul Funaro (KT M). On th e last lap Funaro made a pass to tak e o ver third from Paul . Bal cita (Han), and th en finished nearl y in a nose-to-tail fash ion . In mota two Priddy asserted himself early and got far enough a way 10 not be bothered by th e turmoil over seco nd a nd thi rd pl aces. Alves got a bett er cha nce a t a bett er finis hing position; he wasn 't as locked in traffi c as in moto one. In fact, there didn 't seem to be the passi ng attempted nor acco m p lished as th ere was in th e first rnot o. T he fini shing order was Priddv, Funa ro on hi s KTM a nd Alves. . In 250cc P ro class action , J ohn Dauth (Han) was able to power in for a double mo to win a nd firs t overa ll. H e had 10 foll ow ho lesho t a rtis t Gary Fargo (Suz) for a la p befor e gett ing by on th e diffi cult new j u mp in stall ed at Ba ylands. (AR RA) events at Wi llow Sp rings by winning all four classes he entered on his Kawasaki 900 and 600 Nin ja s. Roloff was unstoppable in 600cc Modified Production a nd 600cc Superstreet, jumping out fron t immedi atel y a nd runni ng away from th e field. In 600cc Modified A, Roloff wa s followed across th e finish line by Steve Ca rdillo and Scott Johnson , both on FJ600 Yarnahas. Darren Fulce (Yam) won 600cc Modified B, beating Ri ck Seaver (Suz) and Carlo Rao (Yam) . Cardillo came back to win 600cc Stock Production , ahead of Ro n Sharpe and Ch uck Waychoff. In Open Stock Production , Rol o ff took th e lead going into turn three a n d ran off , leaving Curtis Adams (Yam FJ IIOO) and Kenny Kopecky (Ninja 900 ) to battle for second place. Kope cky carne from a bad start to ca tch a n d pass Adams, but o n th e la st lap , Adams ou t-bra ked Kopecky going in to turn one an d kept seco nd place for hi s o wn . Rol off pulled aw ay in Open Modified Producti on, with Kopecky la king a secure seco nd ahead of Adams. Co ns ta nt ly-im p ro vi ng J eff Stern rode hi s II 05cc GS 1000Suzuki Superbik e h ard to win Formula One, beating Ji m Vreeke (Yam FZ750 Superbi ke) and Kopecky. Stern got the ho lesh ot off the gr id, with Ko pecky seco nd . Vreeke flew past Kopecky on thefirst lap and set off aft er Stern , but co u ldn ' t ca tch him. But in Open Superstreet, it ha d been different. Stern holesho t with Kopecky seco nd until the fifth tu rn o f th e seco nd lap, wh en Vreeke ca ugh t a nd passed and pulled away from Kopecky. Vreeke, who was dial in g-in carburetion on h is Kerker-sponsored AMA Superbike, th en ca ught a nd left Stern behind. At th e fini sh, it was Stern , Vreeke and Kopecky on h is boX-SIOCk N inj a. Rodriquez attacks DeAnza By Terry Whytal SUNNYMEAD, CA, AUG. 4 Randy Rodriq uez powered his AT K four-stro ke to a convincing Open Pro win at this week 's SMX DeAm a race. The challenging DeAnza co u rse was fast a nd well-prepped a llowin g. Rodriq uez to use the ATK 's awesome power to pull away from his riva ls. Yamaha pilot Keith Williamson provided th e on ly rea l pressure on the lead er, pushing Rodriquez from the number two slo t in eac h moto to earn th e runner -up overa ll honor. Dan Paulson pl aced hi s Honda th ird. Yamaha rider Mike Beier easily to pped th e first round of 250cc Pro acti on but it wa s Colin Ryan and Malt T edd er wh o battl ed for the lead in round two as Beier made two short p it SlOpS o n th e first lap. Yamahamounted Ryan and Honda pil ot Tedder banged bars throughout the seco nd mo to wi th Ryan edgi n g Tedder for th e win with a 2-1 scor e.
