AUG. 17 Pro motocrosser Bria n Manley powered his Dall as Ba ker-p rep ped CR250 Honda to the overall win at the 13th Annual SCORE OffR oad World Ch a m p io n sh ip at R iverside Internati onal Raceway, spo nsored by Turbo-Wash. T he third wave (C lass 20) sta rted with Ro b Gordon (Ka w) assu m ing the early lead wi th Ri ck Maki an d la st year's Class 20 win ne r, Du an e Sum mers, in third. Summers figured he had th e cha nce 10 tak e th e lead and sta rted 10 pressu re Maki before unloading really hard on th e last lap. H e tried 10 get up but was tak en to th e hospital with a broken back. Lu ckil y th ere wa s no nerv e damage but h e will be out of actio n for a few months. Meanwhile, Manley moved his 250 Honda into th e overa ll lead with Mike Baker cruising along at seco nd overa ll. fir st Open. On the last lap, Manley sta rted looking down at hi s rear wh eel and slowing . The pace on the 1.5-mile course broke sever al spo kes in th e rear wheel but the wheel held together until th e finish . Cla ss 30 rid er Randy Rodriguez put on a cha rge to th e front on his AT K four-stroke, pa ssing Barstow-toVega s winner (a nd ATK teammat e) Chris Cr andall a nd event ua l Class 22 win ner Roeseler , prompting cries of " Who was that guy?" At the en d o f the rnoto, Manley had th e o vera ll an d Cla ss 21 win . follow ed in class by Lee Ramage (Ya m), SCOll johnson (Hon) an d desert racer Er ic H a llgath (H us). Maki took th e checkered n ag in th e 125cc cl ass with Kevin H opkins (Hon) , james T uc ker (Hon) a nd j ohn Braa sch j r. (Kaw) in pursuit. T he seco nd moto looked lik e a repla y o f th e first race with Bak er quickl y o ut in th e lead a nd Manley m oving hi s 250 Honda up through th e bikes 10 cha lle n ge for th e lead. Derrick Pai em ent wa s loo king much better in th e seco n d moto on h is CR500 Honda. Hi s throttle grip was loose in th e first moto an d he co u ldn' t ge t Iull throule, Manl ey was soo n in th e overa ll lead position with Baker letting h im go as he was in a different class. But Baker 's lu ck ra n ou t wh en th e bi g Yamaha locked up so lid, putti ng him o u t. La rry Roeseler in heri ted th e lead, m uc h to th e deli ght o f th e Husky fans. Randy Moral es kn ew th at, with Bak er o ut, h e co u ld win h is class by passing Roeseler but just co u ld n' t get arou n d him. "Larry was j us t riding 100 good ," said Moral es lat er. " He was ri d ing o n the ragged ed ge. I co u ld get h im in th e ro ugh stu ff but he wa s just so m uch bet ter in th e tight hairp in th at he go t me th ere two seco nds a lap wh ich was too much to ove rco me." Roeseler 's bik e even had his ISDE ligh ting o n wh ich made it easy 10 see. Meanwhil e, C lass 30 fi rstmoto winner Randy Rodriguez wa s putti ng on a riding exhi bi tio n, m oving a ll the wa y up from a bad sta n to third overa ll behind Roeseler ! " I had a decent sta n, fourth or fifth until so m eo ne threw up some mud at the fir st mudh ol e a nd wa sted my gogg les ," sa id Rodri guez. " I had 10 sto p a nd cl ean th em off: th e mud was even in sid e th em !" . Gordon had returned from his first rnoto cra sh to lead th e 125s but Maki had th e win dialed as h e knew Gordon was no threat for th e overall. Roeseler closed on Manley but at th e checkered flag, Manley had won for th e second time with Roeseler following and Rodriguez closing. Manley had to leave immediately aft er the ra ce for th e su pe rcross a t th e Ros e Bowl but th anked Dallas Baker for selling up th e bik e. He h ad to borrow a rear wh eel for th e seco nd race and the gearing wa s a little lower , CUlling hi s top speed down. Roeseler was very happy about his win . " I ca me just wanting to ride and get back in 10 it. I ha ven ' t raced since I broke m y co lla rbo ne in Michigan at th e qual ifier. The bik e ran grea t and I was trying th e '86 production dampin g in th e shoc k. It was abso lu tely perfect! Wh en I saw Baker p u ll over, I knew I just had to stay in front of Randy (Mora les) for the win . I knew exac tly wh ere I wa s," said a veryhappv -Roeseler afterwards . " I found o u t a co u p le o f da ys ago I have a torn ligament in m y wri st but it 's okay if I tape it. I'll probably have to get it o pe ra ted on wh en I get back from the six da y (ISDE)." Maki wa s a lso very happy. "Hey, I needed that," said Maki a fterwards. " I want to thank Cycle World. Sh oei , SCOll, Barnell. Kal-Gard a nd ProCircuit. They made th e bik e run so wel l. I'm a lillie bit bi g for 125s but this bike was fast !" Class 30 winner Rodriguez was on cloud nine. " It felt reall y gr eat. I wanted 10 wi n for th e o ld guys," said Rodrigu ez. " I wanted 10 prove tha t Over 30 ra cers ca n go just as fas t. He y, I tra in hard and go hard a nd I came cl ose." Rodriguez is sponsored by ATK, O 'N eal an d New-Trend Business Forms.
