Canadians Miles Baldwin a n d Ste ve Crevie r added to Goodfellow 's dom in ance with wins in Formula 98 ... Two a nd 450cc Cafe. Goodfellow made th e tr ip do wn fro m Vancouver, Canada a lo ng with hi s arsena l of Suzu kis and was defin itel y th e class ac t of the da y. Goodfellow sta rt ed th e afternoon with a 46-seco nd win over race promoter Eugene Bro wn in the 750cc Productio n class, foll owed tha t up with a n eig h t-seco nd win over Dou g R enfrow in th e red-fla g-shortened 600cc Superstreet class and en ded th e da y with a seven -seco n d win over Dal e Quarterley in the 100-mile Superbike feature . Ho nda -m ounted Bal dw in, meanwhi le, also made th e tr ip wort h whil e wit h hi s win over Dal e Fra n klin in th e Fo r m u la T wo ra ce. Yamaha mounted Crev ier becam e the third Canadia n winn er a fter de legatin g Fran klin to the ru n ner- up slo t in the 450cc Cafe class. It was a good da y for the Ca na dia ns. Ken Stobba rt held the third spot af ter one lap w it h Keit h P in ks ta ff and Crevier roundin g o u t th e top five. Cornwell snuck by Goodfellow o n la p four of the six -la p heat wh ile Stobbart suddenly found Kevin Monahan ( Ya m) wanting third place . Cornwell held on to h an d Goodfellow h is only setback of the day wh ile Stobbart managed to ho ld orr Mo na han , d esp it e Monah a n 's last -ditch effort in tu rn nine. The seco n d Superbike heat saw Sa turday 's win ner , Tom Wa lt her , leading after o ne lap ahead o f Qua rterley o n his PB I Sprockets /Eag le R a ci n g / S u p erT ra p p / Meg a cyc le/ Bel-Ray/Dyna/Brockton Cycle -sponsore d Ya ma ha. The lead didn't last for long , how ever , as Qua rterley sho t by o n the seco nd la p . The stra tegy go t off to a good sta rt as Goodfellow im media tely gra bbed the lead o n the fro nt straight befor e turn one. The Suzuki pilot led a Ca nadian freight trai n through turn nin e a t th e en d of th e firs t la p as Cornwell and Wa lt her followed with Q ua rt erl ey in fou rt h . G oodfell o w promptly got into the 1:15-ran ge o n la p two and Co rn well was rig ht o n his tai l. The lead in g duo pu lled away as Quarterl ey was involved wit h Walther, but lap fo ur saw Q uart erley make his move after di sp o sin g of Walther. The race for the lea d turned into a th ree-way aff air, but G ood fellow was st ill in co nt ro l. Quarterl ey made a move o n Corn well on lap si x a nd sli pped into secon d p lace. Mean wh il e , Monah an was tea rin g through th e pack a fter a poor sta rt a n d was up to fifth o n th e sixt h lap. Goodfellow a nd Quart er ley moved into th e I:14 bracket on la p eight and in the p rocess pu t some dis ta nce on Cornwell. Mo na han was in a heat ed battle wit h Stobba rt for fo urt h pl ace wh i le si x t h p lace wa s be in g co n trolled by P inkst a ff. Goodfell ow 's pace was sta rt ing to be a burden for Q uarterl ey a n d th e Ma ssachu se tt s rider bega n to lo se gro u n d o n the Canadian . T he lead er s sta rted en countering tr aff ic a nd a t the halfway mark of th e 30-lap race, G o odfell ow had a 2.5 -secon d lea d ove r Quarterl ey. Monahan a lso began to asse rt h im self in " traffic and finall y got by Stobba rt a nd i n to fo urth place. Mo na h an was n 't con ten t wi t h fourt h a nd set a fter Cornwell. On lap 22 , G o odfell ow led Quarter le y b y seven seco n ds, Monahan s ho t b y Cornwell a n d sudde n ly was on ly a seco nd behind Q ua rterley. Two laps lat er , Monahan grabbed the seco nd spot from Quarterl ey a nd th ey bo th started gai ni ng on Goodfellow. With four lap s to go, the ga p bet ween G ood fellow an d Monahan wa s down to fo ur seco nds , but Monahan co u ld not keep up th e pace. I co u ld see h im (Q uarterley) th ere, bu t I rea lly didn 't feel threaten ed a t a ll." Quarterl ey felt a l ittle cheated agains t th e mor e powerfu l Suzuki. " I did n ' t ha ve enough motor ," he said. " He 'd pull o u t 30 bik elen gths on the straights a nd I had to ride my bu tt off in the corners trying to ca tch up. I j us t burnt up th e tire trying. He had the a wesome mo tor; we don' t ha ve $ 10,000 mot ors." T he Fo rmul a T wo fin a l p u t th e two hea t race win ners , Baldwin and Fra n kli n , tog ether for th e first time and they ended the firs t lap side-bysid e . T hi rd pl ace was he ld by Yamaha -mounted Ken Botham. Baldwin turned a I: 16 on lap five a n d began to pu ll away from Franklin, wh o in turn was way ahead o f th e rest o f th e pack. By la p 12, Bal dwi n hel d a n 12second lead ove r Frankl in with Botham sti ll in th ird pl ace. Baldwin, the L a gun a Seca Formul a Tw o winner, eased o ff the pace in the final la ps a nd held on for the win . Franklin cru ised in for seco nd followed by Botham a nd Doug Guthrie. Goodfell ow immedi atel y j umped out fro n t in the 600cc S u pe rs treet fin al and aft er th ree laps hel d a fiveseco nd lead. Seco nd pl ace saw a battle between Brown a nd Ren fro w wit h Ren frow event ua lly ge tti ng th e edge o n lap fi ve. On lap eig ht , Arno ld And rews a nd T om Marx crashed togethe r whi le exitin g turn nine a nd th e ra ce was red -flagged. Goodfe llow was aw arded th e win with Renfro w a n d Br own fin ishing seco n d and third, respectively. C revier sho t h is RZ350 Yam aha into the lead at th e sta rt of the 15-la p 450cc Ca fe class and never looked ba ck . Franklin con tro lled sec o n d - from the sta rt a nd a ltho ugh he stayed wi th in a few seco nds for most of th e race, Crevier won by n early 10 seconds. Lan ce Wool en y he ld third pl ace for m uch of th e ra ce bu t on lap n ine he dragged a peg and Eri c Garland moved h is R D400F into third .
