T he program opened wit h th e 80cc A class and Sta n ley grabbed the lead from DeVries a nd never relinquished it. By the th ird la p Stanley had a four second lead on DeVries as they pulled away from the field. J ay Chenier (Yam) was in th ird a nd bac k 18 seconds fro m Sta n ley. DeVries, in trying to . ca tch Stan ley, went down on the seventh lap. T his gave Stanley a litt le slack and he took the checkered on la p II with a 10 second lead. DeVri es p laced second wi th Chenier thi rd. Bill y Zwick demons tra ted wh y he is th e po int leader in th e 80cc B class. Zwick got th e hol esh ot a nd led to th e flag. Seco nd pl ace was up for gra bs, however , with Zack T aylor (Kaw) a nd Justin Rogers (Kaw) vyin g for that posit ion. Rogers go t arou nd Taylor o n lap four, but lap five saw T aylor back in seco nd. This du el continued lap a fter lap. On th e eigh th la p o nly one second separa ted them and while Zwick raced uncontest ed for first place. Ta ylor held off Rogers to claim second. Wh en th e gate fell in the !05cc A class. Stanley took the point position and again had DeVries in tow . Feeling pressure from DeVries, Stanley fell a nd DeVri es took th e lead on lap four. Stanley regained th e lead on lap six and set o ff a t a blistering pace o pe ning a !O seco nd lead. At the end it was Stanley lead in g a chargi ng DeVries to the flag by six seco nds . Bill y Zwick co nvinci ngly won the 60cc A moto, Although th e tra ck was getting slick from drizzling rain. he looked hi s best o n th e 60cc bik e. Running in second Zack Taylor a lso looked very fast. but landing off a tabl e top jump with a bit too much throttle cuased him 10 crash. The 12year old racer was helped up onl y to remount and turn th e wick up a bit higher in pursu it o f Zwick. H e went on to fini sh second. T oday Kell cashed in by taking fir st pl ace in th e 250cc Pro conte st. In the first rnoto it was " o ld man " a Ken Z hrt ta ki ng a coma nd ing lead . whi le Kell had a bad start and th e race was almos t over befor e he was a ble to focus in o n Zahrt. Ti medid not a llow Kell 10 tag Zahrt and he had to sett le for seco nd p lace. " Crasher " John ' Posca act ua lly stayed mounted and took third aboard his Yamaha ahead of Yama ha riders Mark Decker and Keith Will ia mson. Kell showed everyone th e right way to ta ke off the starting line in the fina l moto w he n he powered his FMF Kawasaki to the lead and remained there till the completion of th e rac e. Wh ile Kell styled, severa l o thers fell prey to the cha lle nging course as J erry Black. Posca , and Decker fell o ut o f co ntention. And whe n th e fram e brok e o n th e wat er truck Saturda y. ro lli ng it ove r onto the middle of th e tra ck, th ing s were looking grim for th e event. Before practice began Su nday morn in g . th e riders were asked if th ey would still want to go ahead with th e event o r cance l th e round. and surprisingl y. th e majority vo ted to go a head wi th th e race, a nd so me 95 riders took to th e trac k for a very to ugh day in th e du st. Going ahead with the action proved to be especia ll y beneficial to one fam ily . as th e Hyde Brothers. Curt and Lynn . walked off with a ll three Pro class o vera lls between th em and a ll but o ne o f the six motos in th e three divi sions. Curt H yde ca me out stro ng with a domination o f th e 125cc Pro ca tego ry. th en foll owed th at up with a win in the 250cc Pro ca tegory. Lynn mad e it a clea n sweep by gra bbi ng both o f th e O pen Pro mot o s despit e Terry Pratt slides his BSA twin en route to second place in the Open Non-Unit class at Perris Raceway; David Breetwar took the win. some problems in the first go-around. Starting off th e day 's action was th e 250cc Pro class, and as th e pa ck h eaded into th e first tum Curt H yde had the holeshot with Dave Molder . Dave Zuhr a nd Greg H yde behind. Molder had a horrendous moto, getting pushed out in th e first lap a nd going down . taking another sp ill on th e next lap. working a ll th e way up to fourth with two laps to go, only to go down again a nd wind up in eigh th . Meanwhile. Curt Hyde motored out into th e lead . as Greg Hydeand Dave Zuhr set up a fight for th e runner-up position .. Hyde got th e better of the two, taking over th e second position near th e ha lfwa y mark in th e moto. For th e remainder, th e top three positio ns held firm. a nd Curt H yde took th e win foll owed by Greg Hyde, Zuhr, Tony Ulric h and J oe T hom pson. Round two saw Curt H yde again ge t out of th e ga te first. but he blew th e fir st corner a nd allowed Molder a nd Ulr ich to slip by. Cu rt H yde soo n repassed U lric h and began to set a fter Molder, but by th en Molder had a so lid lea d built up. Curt H yde took a face full o f di rt o n th e third lap tryin g to rei in th e leader. g iving U lric h and Greg H yde a chance to catch right back up. For the d ura tion o f the race Curt H yde kept both wheels upright and co ncentrated o n buildi ng a littl e brea thi ng room over the battle between U lrich and G reg H yde. Greg H yde got the th ird place Posi tio n on the fi fth la p . b ut was u nab le 10 advance a ny farther in the time remai n in g. and Mol der took th e win wit h C urt H yde second in the mot o bu t first in th e overalls. Greg H yde's thi rd gave him seco nd ove ra ll to U lrich's 4-4 third o vera ll ta lly. while Zuhr pi cked up fifth in th e mot o and nudged o u t Molder for fourth overa ll. Curt H yde ret urned in th e l25cc Pro class a nd took over immediatel y in round oneas Clint Overman pulled in beh ind. The lead ing duo pulled a way from th e field com forta bly by th e halfway mark. but behind L ynn H yde was hav ing a ll kinds of trouble in his first a ttem p t a t racing a 125cc th is year. L ynn H yde began in fifth . go t pa st both Ra nd y Sa lveson and Henry Jordon, a nd then began a string o f cras hes th at sent him right back into fifth o nce more. Th e leadin g tri o ca me ac ross th e line in th e o rder of Curt H yde. Overman a nd J ordon, while Lynn H yde rem ounted and recaptured fou rt h just ahead o f Sa lveson . Ro u nd two of the 125s resembled the first round as Curt H yde took th e early lead , and Overman soo n worked past H enry J ordon and into second. Once more th e leaders put a com fort able di stance betw een the mselves a nd th e field. a nd Curt Hyde ran his marg in a ll th e way to the wire for th e moto a nd o vera ll vic tory. O verm an picked up second with Jordon th ird once again a fter L ynn H yde had tak en th e show spot only to crash and wind up fourth. Salv eson o nce again took fifth in th e mo to for th e same positi on in th e overalls. . Lynn H yde kept true to hi s unusual form a t th e start of th e first Open Pro rnot o. T ony U lrich took th e holeshot ahead o f H yde. but in th e seco nd corner H yde was nailed from behind a nd went flying o ff th e track . Ulrich th en set o ff to a huge lead as H yde worked his way back onto th e track a nd bega nto stea dily ga in grou nd o n U lr ich. Late in the moto as Ulrich was lappin g slower riders, H yde reeled hi m in with onl y two laps to go. L ynn H ydethen mad e hi s move o n th e back sect io n o f th e cou rse a nd slip ped in sid e Ulrich and into th e lead. Ulrich lost grou nd righ t a fter th e pass. and never cha llenged H yde in the fina l lap as Lynn H yde took the moto. • Ro u nd two saw Lyn n H yde a nd U lrich go into the first tu rn side-byside. a nd th is time H yde made it through the corner wi thout goi ng do wn a nd went into the lead. Ulrich bega n a chase fro m behind and tried hard in the 'o pe n ing la p to ge t the lead a way fro m H yde. but on th e backstretch U lrich went d own , a nd ga ve H yde a very sizeable lead early on. Ulrich remounted a nd worked himself into a so lid seco nd. but he couldn' t reel in H yde. wh o rode flawlessly th e rem ainder of the moto to tak e th e overall win a hea d of Ulrich .
