By Mike Vancil SANTA CLARA, CA, JULY 26 It was a night for surprises in the 250 and 500cc Professional classes as Shawn McConn made one of his rare appearances and .. 42 • ended with the cla ss victory wh ile newcomer to the P.A.L. scene, Rick Luther, commanded the top spo t in the 500cc Pro ciass . Moto one winner in both cla sses was hard charging Eric Mashbir (Nelson Bros. Honda/ Tri- Valley Honda/Mac's Motors), fight ing hi s way by Dan Boles (Yam / Team U.S./Moto-X Fox/Paul Turner Racing/Dirt Rider Detergent). Also making his presence felt in the first 250cc moto was another newcomer, George Hopper (Hon ). Hopper never got to challenge for the lead bu t was among the trio who pulled away from the pack. In the second moto of the 250cc clas s, Mashbir crashed after gain ing the lead and could only muster a fo urt h place. McConn combined a fourth and a first for first overall. Open-class action was just as excit ing as som e of the same riders participated. Mashbir won the first moto while being chased the entire dista nce by Rick Luther (Hen), Kimo Casey put his CR Honda into th ird at the checkers. In th e second rnoto, Luther got th e better start when Mashbir fell in th e first corner, but late in the mot o Mashbir had caught up to Luther and tried an ins ide pass on a tight right-hander. The two bumped but no on e went down , then one lap lat er Luther pulled the same type of inside pass on an off-camber uphill left-hander, only this time Mashbir took yet another spill. Luther was the overall victor over Mashbir. Other cla ss ac tion that was spectacular came in the second moto of the 125cc Intermediate class. All entrants in the class gave permission for 80cc Expert clas s rider Chris Neal (Yam/Team U.S./Moto-X Fox/PJ- 1I Scott USA/Dirt Rider Detergent/Paul Turner Racing/Cysco Seats) to ride as an exhibition entrant. Neal got out of th e fir st corner running last, but methodically worked hi s way by each rider until reaching the rear wheel of leader Wade Cobern (H on/ C oose Bros. Racing). Try as he might Neal's 80cc just didn't have the final umph to get by Cobern, who took th e moto win. T he overall victor in th e class, however, was Shaun Lee (Kaw) by virtue of his two second place finishes. Another po pular class was the 250cc Intermediates wh ere Cory Perreault (Suz) made a comeback a ppearance after being out of action for several weeks due to a smas hed finger. His return was memorable by the total domination of the classa s he gained double rnoto victories with a fair amount of ease. Jon King (Circle Industries /Maxima/Malcolm Smith Products /W alnut Creek Honda ) pushed through the pack to gain a pair of seconds beh ind Perreault's pair of firsts. Results PEE WEE 50: 1. Mashbir doubles at 8aylands MX By M ike Vancil FREMONT, CA, JULY 24 Oakland-based Baylands-regular Eric Mashbir piloted a pair of well-tuned Honda CRs to three ou t of four moto victories to tak e th e overall in both the 250 and 500cc Professional classes . Opposition was stiffer in the 500cc class where Mashbir had to pass J ack Hulse (Moto-X Fox /Tuf Distributing/Maxima/Concord Kaw)and fight off repeated passing attempts from Devon Joos (Hon /O 'Nea l/Team U.S.). In the first 500cc rnoto Hulse got the better drive off the grid and was first into the 1200 first corn er. Mashbir and Joos followed closely while the remaining entrants were experiencing problems with each other a nd the difficult Baylands course. By the third lap, Mashbir had passed Hulse, and two laps later Joos also got by Hulse but couldn't make th e pass stick. They finished Mashbir , Hulse and Joos. Moto two was much like the first round as Mashbir led Hulse and Joos to the finish line. In the 250cc rnoto, Mashbir asserted himself early, never to be headed the entire rnoto. Dan Cole (Yam) and then Howie Ross (Suz/ Cycle West! Moto-X Fox /Cabral Racing) fin ished behind Mashbir. In th e second moto, Mashbir was trying to put the cap on a Iour-Ior-four evening when he brief- ly fell, allowing Ross to go by and hold the lead to the checkers. The 12-to-16-year bracket of 80cc Minibike Junior class riders was another exciting affair as Jason Warren (Kaw) battled to victory in both motos, In moto one he was chased hard th e entire distance by Kennie McGrath, while in third was Joe Lawwill, so n of AMA racing great Mert Lawwill. In the second rnoto, Lawwill grabbed the lead on the white £lag lap when Warren fell on the last jump prior to the flag , but he too fell in the sa me p lace prior to the checkered . This spo t was just 25 yards from th e finish line, a nd Warren walked away with first overall ahead of Lawwill. Results PEE WEE 60: 1. Darin Rayzor (Han). MINI BO 9 -" NOV: 1. Poet smokes 'em at Sears Point RR By Roger Sm ith SONOMA, CA, JULY 7 The fans at the AFM North Road Race were treated toa day of close racing as the midseason battles for the club and class championships are narrowing down to fierce on e-on-one cont ests. The 600cc cla sses, the largest by far , al so produced th e most championsh ip points and the closest racing for those points. When the green flag dropped on the 600cc Super street race, Mark Ruffner's wild wheelie cost him the lead at th e first turn. Ed Ragle, on his Zebra-striped Red Eagle Racing Yam ah a grabbed the lead, followed closely by Ed Woo. The pair held th e first two slo ts until J ames Huebn er , running a t th e front of the pack, went down in turn 10. There weren 't any inj ur ies, but the race was stopped to clean up after the high-speed get-off. On the restart, Ruffner kept hi s front wheel closer to the ground and hea t Ragle to the first turn, but Jim Po et and Woo had already grabbed the first two positions. Poe t and his 550cc Kawasaki began to pull away from Woo, who had hi s hands full trying to hold off th e hard charging Ruffner. By the halfway point, Poet had a commanding lead and Ruffner had gained th e upper hand in his duel with Woo. Woo kept the pressure on unt il th e fini sh , but th e final ord er .was unchanged . Gl en Shopher was one of the first rid ers out for the warm-up lap in the 600cc Modified Production race. That, a nd a short delay gett ing th e 50-p lu s rid er field organized on th e gr id, allowed him to fix the mechanical p roblem he discovered on the warmup laps a nd still be ready for th e stan. H e sho wed how read y he was by mov- ing past the front row and leading the pack into the first turn. When th e leaders came down off the field ..Ed Ragle had a slight edge over Robert Sells and a host of other Yamaha riders fighting for the lead Ragle slowly increased his lead as a series of rid ers came up to contes t Sell 's hold on second place. Jim Jepsen was th e most p ersistant, and when Sells retired in the third lap, he took a firm hold on seco nd pl ace . Rob ert Barretta then in heri ted th e task of holding off the tightly grouped pack of riders that chased th e leaders right up to the checkered flag . Ragle won with a two-second margin over J ep son , wh ile Barrett a held on for th ird. The 600cc Box Stock race was nearly a carbon copy of th e 600cc Mod ified Production class. AMA Pro Scott Gray, still recovering from a get-off . in th e Sears Point National , brought ou t his person al FJ600 to loo sen up for the upcoming Laguna Seca National. He was threatened briefly by Jepson, but a t th e end it was Gray, Jepson a nd Barrett a. The priz e money offered in the Yam aha RZ series has a ttracted both tal ent a nd entries to the new cla ss. Currentl y three of the to p 10 in AFM cha m pions h ips points h ave been earning those points on an RZ. The race looked wide open since class lead er Paul Van Zuyl e was not th ere. Malcolm Hill , who seemed to win everyth ing Van Zuyle didn 't , had a brand new bike sin ce th e last one had been disqual ified for an illegal porting jo b. Wh en th e race began, perpetual runner-up Scott Moore gra bbed the lead and held on fiercely. He was cha sed by a pa ch of five rid ers that included Hill, who mo ved up through th e rest of th e bikes. The reportedl y stock motor didn't show any advan tage in horsepower ; Hill just wove and wobbled hi s way through th e other bikes, findin g a few more inches of track in th e corners. Once secure in second, Hill began ea ting away at Moore's slim lead. Once the y reached th e back-m arkers, Hill got past Moore in traffic and proved to be uncatchabl e as he moved through th e back of the pack . Moor e was never seriously threatened in second pl ace, bu t the battle for third never let up. All four of the contestant s held third for at least a few moments. but it was longtime RD racer Blaine Ida who was in front when the checkered £lag feIl. The fin al order was Hill, Moore and Ida. • Results OPEN GP: 1. Rich Ol iver (Kaw); 2. Den ny Dohert y (Kaw); 3. Ron Weilend (Kaw). F-l : 1. Vince Costa (Kaw); 2. J im Poet (Kaw); 3 .
