Lucero started in position three and was beaten out of the gate by Pfetzin g. Lucero remedied that situation in turn one wh en he gave Pf etzing a tap and knocked him down. J ULY 27 The Napa Invitational Wine Cup Championship brought Denni s Robinson 's se ven th season of speedway promotion to a close to nigh t at Napa. It was a perfect night o f racing , a nd without a doubt the best cha mpionshi p in recent mem or y a t Napa. However , a perfect sco re wa s not to be. J ohn H ouston J r. was th e spo iler for David Faria Jr. in the first heat of the even ing, as he got the ga te off the pole. Stret ching hi s lead with eac h la p , Houston took th e chec kered fla g before th e rest of th e field got to turn four; Fari a was second. Steve Martin ca used a n othe r upset in h eat four, wh en he forced Orland i to sett le for seco nd in that even t. At th e en d o f round two th e on ly rider sti ll claiming a perfect score wa s Mik e Delacy, wh o con ti n ued hi s win n in g ways until even t 14 wh en Pat Linn, wh o had ended Bart Bast's perfect score in event five, bested Delacy. The four riders in even t 20 were in a four-wa y tie with II po ints each th ere was no cha nce of a run-off. The fini sh of this event would decid e the title.
